This was a fabulous multi-disciplinary day, introduced by Eccles Sze Ng, Lecturer – BA (Hons) Landscape Architecture at BCU, during which the children learned about what it means to be a Landscape Architect – visionary, creative, courageous – thinking about sustainability, impact, materials and costings. They had lots of questions and their favourite bridge was the one in London, which rolls up!

The day was then split into two challenges-

1. Bridge Challenge – working in teams to make bridges out of newspaper, art straws and masking tape, under the guidance of Eccles, teaching them the principles of bridge structure, and encouraging them to evaluate, reflect and persevere. This session also included sketching a design for a bridge and testing bridge structure with the Bridge App on the iPad.

2. Lego Construction
The challenge set before for this session was to construct bridges for trains, cars, boats, pedestrians and animals in order to connect settlements. Mr Philip Garside from Team Building Workshops brought along approximately 85,000 Lego bricks to enable the children to complete this task. Initially, pupils worked enthusiastically in pairs to create houses and buildings. Then in groups of 4, they pooled ideas to solve the problem of making a structure to cross one of the 3 rivers dividing the settlements. Pupils came up with some outstanding designs including a ‘Ponte Vecchio ‘ style bridge with houses, shops and gardens.

The day came to an end all too quickly; don’t be surprised if your Year 4 children want to make bridges out of junk or get the Lego out this half term – please encourage them. It’s great fun at any age!!
