SWIMMING
We are excited to announce that after the October Half Term holiday we will be offering swimming lessons on a Friday afternoon to all of the children in Reception. Mrs Andrews and I have put together a timetable of when classes will swim and parents will be notified as soon as possible. Children will need to have a Blue Coat costume and swimming hat for their weekly curriculum swimming lesson. This is a first for the school and something we wish to continue in the future.
Our TED group thoroughly enjoyed their synchro lesson with Mrs Barrowclift and it was great to see the children being challenged on a new sport and new set of skills. After the Half Term break we will continue to do synchro and water polo, as well as swimming, in our TED group on a Friday afternoon.
Every week our squads are developing and looking stronger, faster and united as a team. The work ethic and professionalism demonstrated is fantastic and we are starting to see the success. I would like to say a massive congratulations to Kieran (5S) on his selection to join the City of Birmingham Swimming Club. Kieran has been selected to join following his Thursday morning squad training here at the school and it’s the reward of his dedication and commitment to his training.
We are looking at introducing new curriculum and squad swimming hats for our children. I will be able to update you on this further after the October Half Term break.

U10A Rugby v Eversfield (H)
Monday 2 October
BCS 7 – 9 Eversfield
Most Valued Player: AY for his powerful running and hard tackling.
In the proverbial “game of two halves” the U10A’s were narrowly beaten by a strong Eversfield side. The game was a full-blooded affair with both teams showing an enormous amount of courage and resilience. The evasion skills shown by the Blue Coat side were excellent, especially William Brett and AY. Ashley Jindu led from the front in tackling but we need to work as a team in defending as a unit and improving our line speed. We also need to work hard at the ruck area to improve our contact skills. Overall though an encouraging performance which we will look to build on during the term.

U10B Rugby v Eversfield (H)
Monday 2 October
BCS 25-40 Eversfield
Most Valued Player: Flynn McLoughlin
Blue Coat started well, running hard at the opposition and looking for the offload when held in contact. Some great support play and forward running led to two early tries. Eversfield then came back at us and although the boys attempted the tackles we need to work on getting lower and holding on to the player.
A great game of attacking rugby, which went from end to end.

U11 Netball v Paganel Primary School (H)
Friday 6 October
BCS 5 – 5 Pagenal
Most Valued Player: Willow McKenzie
After the initial drama of seeing the opposition with 2 boys in their netball team, Blue Coat calmed down and concentrated on the task in hand. The girls started off slowly and were drawing in the first quarter 2-2. Paganel went ahead 5-3 and BCS showed their fighting spirit in what was to be a dramatic final quarter, with Willow and Bea playing their hearts out to try and drag the scoreline back in our favour. What a fantastic game, played with real competitive spirit by all.

U11 Football Tournament (Aston Villa) (H)
Tuesday 10 October
BCS 1 – 1 Harborne Primary
BCS 2 – 3 Chad Vale
BCS 0 – 0 Our Lady of Fatima School
BCS 0 – 0 St Thomas C of E Academy
BCS 1 – 0 St George’s
There was a real classic tournament feeling at Blue Coat on Tuesday, with small pitches and plenty of football to be played. It took 30 seconds for the first goal to be scored, Alex Bryans hounding their defence and getting a lucky deflection. However Blue Coat switched off to goal side marking, and Harborne equalised. We then had a tough Chad Vale match and they finished top of our group, taking an early 2-0 lead. With drive and determination we pulled two goals back, only to concede late on to a very well worked goal. Two draws may look strong but that elusive goal to give us three points and reach the semi final couldn’t be found. Finishing third in the group, it was a fantastic run out for the boys. Luke Dolan and Ashley Jindu should have a special mention for playing a year up at short notice- lots of experience to be gained!
Scorers: Kairav Singh, Michael Draper, Alexander Bryans

U11A Rugby v Eversfield (H)
Wednesday 4 October
BCS 15-15 Eversfield
Alex Forty – determined running and much improved defence.
An excellent game of rugby in which the boys showed huge improvements from their last match. Blue Coat started the game well, running hard at the opposition and hitting the rucks at pace to keep possession. Relentless defence made it difficult for Eversfield to score and Blue Coat took at strong 2 try lead at half time. In the second half, Eversfield came out firing and an early try fueled them with confidence. A draw was probably a fair result, The Blue Coat boys really gave everything and can be immensely proud of their performance. To improve, we just need to look to pass the ball before contact and run into space.

U11A Hockey v RGS The Grange (A)
Wednesday 4 October
Blue Coat 0 – 4 RGS
Most Valued Player: Willow Mckenzie for the best gymnastic style stick save I have ever seen!
Too much fun was had at RGS, with Blue Coat really stepping up to the pace and controlling the AstroTurf. To me the score is irrelevant: the pupils were determined throughout the match and showed chunks of possession where we deserved a goal. Gracie Wynne looked comfortable as a centre half and Poppy Couzens is finally showing composure to carry forward, delivering accurate passes forward! Looking forward to next week’s two challenges!

U11D Hockey v RGS The Grange (A)
Wednesday 4 October
Blue Coat 1 – 0 RGS
Most Valued Player: Shalu Arun understood the self pass rule superbly.
This was a really fun game for the girls who took to playing on an AstroTurf in their stride. With lots of possession we finally broke the deadlock in the second half. Amulya Maganty read the game well in defence and tackled with purpose but Shalu Arun really created some glorious opportunities that on another day could have been 4-5 goals!

U11 Hockey IAPS Regional Tournament (A)
Wednesday 11 October
BCS 0 – 0 Bablake
BCS 1 – 0 Kimbolton
BCS 0 – 0 Stamford Junior
BCS 0 – 2 Winchester House
BCS 0 – 3 Fairfield
Most Valued Player: Poppy Couzens is really maturing as a player, storming the tackle and distributing forward with purpose.
A fantastic tournament that was hosted by Repton School, and a superb step up by two Year 5s in Maya Hart and Bea Neeson. Our first match should have been a win for Blue Coat, but we missed some golden opportunities to take the lead. One goal in tournaments is all you need, then defend for your lives!! Unfortunately this proved to be our downfall and against stronger opposition we paid the price. The eventual winners of the region, Winchester House, beat us 2-0 in the group and we eventually finished 4th out of 6 schools. Willow Mckenzie is fastly becoming a hockey talent in goal, and Skye Henshaw seems to have that hunger going forward.

U11A Hockey v Bromsgrove (A)
Wednesday 11 October
BCS 0 – 4 Bromsgrove U11D
Most Valued Player: Willow Mckenzie for making outstanding decisions in goal
After quite a delay to the match, we played one way 20 minutes against a well-organised Bromsgrove side. Their goals came from our decision making in defence of when to clear and play safe away from central areas. We looked our strongest when we made early passes forward and were awarded two penalty corners.

U11B Hockey v Bromsgrove (A)
Wednesday 11 October
BCS 0 – 0 Bromsgrove
Most Valued Player: Gabrielle Estridge-Whyte
Our match was postponed for 45 minutes whilst we waited for an U13 fixture to finish. The girls started off positively and had lots of possession, with Isabella working hard in the middle trying to play the ball forwards to Sarab. Going against play, Bromsgrove scored and we went 1-0 down. We started again and Sareena drove forwards down the wing and played Sarab in, but the goalkeeper made the save and Rebecca couldn’t quite get the rebound. Anne-Laure and Isabell defended well as a pair but a Bromsgrove pass in behind the defence caught us by surprise and although Gabrielle saved the first shot, a Bromsgrove player was there to smash in their second chance.

U11C Hockey v Bromsgrove (A)
Wednesday 11 October
Bromsgrove 0 – 0 BCS
Most Valued Player: Flora Gregory
The U11C team couldn’t quite find the killer instinct to see off Bromsgrove. A solid defence, especially from Charissa, held them at bay but despite Player of the Match, Flora Gregory’s, best effort in attack, Blue Coat could not find the winning goal.

Wednesday 11 October
BCS 2 – 1 Bromsgrove

A late start to the match meant reduced play time which worked in our favour; an even game with lots of mileage up and down the pitch.

U10D Rugby v Winterfold (A)
Monday 16 October
Winterfold B 45 – 15 BCS
Most Valued Player: Zahid Ahmed
As tropical air and dust swept in from the Sahara on Monday afternoon, the views across the pumpkin field at Winterfold were even more spectacular than usual. High winds didn’t stop Zahid Ahmed and Rajan Sall running hard at the opposition as BCS always looked dangerous with the ball. After half time the side began to offload the ball at the first sign of contact, which created more space and led to 3 great tries. However, throughout the game, whenever Winterfold gained possession, our defensive frailties were exposed. The first tackle was often missed and it was too easy for the opposition to run in tries.
Scorers: Rajan Sall, Zahid Ahmed (2)

U9A Hockey v Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School (H)
Tuesday 17 October
BCS 6 – 0 WGS
Most Valued Player: Emily Whitehouse
The U9A side were privileged to be the first team to play a match on the new AstroTurf this week and expectations were high! They started the game with great urgency and got hold of the ball right from the outset. We released the ball early and there was some really great passing on show. Our forward line of Indira Singh and Sofia Phillips always looked threatening but early on in the game the WGS goalkeeper pulled off some fine saves. However, once the first goal had been scored, confidence grew and the side attacked with real energy slotting home six goals in total – the side would like to show their appreciation to Mrs Bennett who took the midweek squad session and ‘drummed in’ the importance of being nasty in front of goal! Although the goalscorers grabbed the headlines, one would be foolish not to recognise the contribution of the whole side in this fixture. Well done girls on a fine performance!
Scorer: Indira Singh (2), Sofia Phillips (3), Holly Wilson

Tuesday 17 October
BCS 32 v 4 WGJS
Most Valued Player: Filippos Psychogios for tackling low throughout the game.
The Blue Coat team dominated from the start with strong individual running from each boy. Wolverhampton’s tackling improved throughout the game but despite plenty of possession they were unable to make any real progress against a good Blue Coat defence.

Tuesday 17 October
BCS 16 v 12 WGJS
Most Valued Player: A great team effort, with many players standing out: Adam Bashir for his running, Richard Mahlberg-Schilling for his evasion.
The U9B rugby team served up a hugely entertaining game against WGJS. The score of 16-12 was a fair reflection, with most of WGJS’s tries scored by one boy who was lightening quick. The Blue Coat team scored some excellent tries, with Adam Bashir showing a great turn of speed. However, the most pleasing try occurred at the end of the game when the ball went through numerous hands with fantastic support play, culminating in a great team try. Well done, to all as the effort and commitment was great, as was the support. An area to work on for next time is our line speed to apply pressure to the opposition.

Tuesday 17 October
Most Valued Player: Oliver Tucker & James Padley showed fantastic game understanding and lead from the front
Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School proved to be a fair and equal opposition for the C team: whilst tries were scored frequently, we had some superb phases of play. Blue Coat were better at passing out of contact, especially Jayden Briah and Ben Southall. However, WGJS had the edge on tackles, managing to twice reach the 6 count and turn over the ball.

Most Valued Player: Oje Akhibi & Rohan Tandon – attacking runs runs into space
An exciting end-to-end game of rugby in which the boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Blue Coat boys are learning to hold their shape in attack and defence and run forward when they receive the ball. As the game progressed we learnt to look and give the pass to a team mate when our tag was taken. A good first game of the season, well done.
