On Saturday 27th January 2018, several chess players from The Blue Coat School and their parents arrived at Hallfield School for the quarter finals of the National Primary Schools Chess Championship. We had teams competing in an Under 11 section and an Under 9 section, against strong opposition from Hallfield, St Mary’s, West House and Stafford Prep.
In the Under 9s Aarav, Aadi, Jai, Henry, Priyamvada, Joel, John and Kush all battled hard against experienced opponents and played some good chess. Our star performer was Aarav who took on the best player from each team on board 1, and scored a very commendable 3/5. Jai also scored 3/5 in his first ever tournament, while Priyamvada won an excellent final round game. Unfortunately the team didn’t quite manage to pick up enough points to progress to the semi final this time, but with a little more experience they’ll be back next year I’m sure!
In the Under 11 section Tristan, Ansh, Josh, George, Joseph and Arya took on all the strongest local chess players. Tristan scored an excellent 3.5/5 on top board, which on another day might have been 4.5 or even 5 with the positions he had. Joseph got off to a storming start winning his first 3 games, and was only stopped in his tracks by an experienced Hallfield player in round 4. Overall the team missed out on qualification for the semi final by just half a point; a shame after an excellent tournament for them, but some excellent chess was played by all on the day, and the experience will prove valuable in the next competitions in which they play.
I’d like to thank all the parents, chess players, Mr Newman and Mr Neeson for coming along on the day; events like this wouldn’t happen without all your support. I hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as I did, and we can look forward to the next chess tournament with confidence.
