World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and, most importantly, it’s a celebration of reading. It was exciting to see the brilliant costumes that the children and staff had put together to look like their favourite book characters.

Mary Poppins, Stanley Yelnats and not forgetting Katniss Everdeen came to The Blue Coat School yesterday to help celebrate. The ‘Beast from the East’ could not deter the enthusiasm of the children and staff, who embraced the day in high spirits, sharing their love of books and favourite authors together.

In Prep the day commenced with an exciting Form assembly performed majestically by 5D. This was followed by some of the Prep children being chosen to ‘buddy’ with Pre-Prep children; support them in their writing as well as ‘buddy read’ with them.

In 2P, Mrs Powell was immersed in the strange and marvellous world of Willy Wonka, when more than half of her class turned up as Oompa Loompas! The whole day consisted of exciting literacy based activities and the children look forward to sharing their class World Book Day Booklets with you at home.

In Transition the children were busy making mini-books, bookmarks and reading their favourite stories to one another.  In the morning they were very lucky to be joined by friends in Year 4 who helped them to have lots of fun in the classroom.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, dressing up as their favourite characters and, as in previous years, it is an excellent way to promote reading and the value of books. World Book Day 2018 was certainly a whole school affair this year as our photos show. We now look forward to the opportunities presented through Bournville BookFest, fast approaching later this month….
