The inaugural BCS Science Fair was a fantastic success this week, giving all Year 6 pupils a chance to challenge themselves with some investigative study. Following scientific methods and principles taught and developed over the course of their time at Blue Coat, the children chose a topic of interested and embarked on a research project into their chosen aspect of real world science. They were required to present their findings in a table top display to form part of a special exhibition.

The children tackled the challenge with willingness and great success, using their powers of stamina, imagination and enterprise. The variety of investigations on display was quite remarkable. They ranged from which football performs the best to which is cleaner – a dog or its owner? Pupils also investigated which fruit gave off the most electricity and which washing powder produced the most bubbles. Culminating in an interview with one of the four judges from the University of Birmingham, Solihull School, KES and EHS, the boys and girls answered questions and explained their projects in detail. Many thanks to our judges for coming along and inspiring the children with their feedback.

Congratulations to all of Year 6 for showing such determination and hard work throughout the process. This year’s deserving winner was May Hadley with her project on slime!  Also highly commended were Victoria Lawson-Bennett, Emma Burns, Emily Bongs, Isabelle Clarkson, Flora Gregory, Tilly Richardson and Peter Tomlinson. We hope this opportunity has encouraged pupils to ask the right questions and dig deep within themselves to find their own answers. Well done to all!
