St. Philip’s House Charity Day got off to a flying start with their Superheroes assembly on Thursday. Batman, Superman and the Incredibles were among the spectacular cast that helped us to learn what makes a hero.  We discussed how many of our everyday heroes carry out their incredible jobs and tasks as part of their normal day to day routine.  Such are the superheroes that operate the Midlands Air Ambulance service every day and rescue lives.

Abbie Hawkins from the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity gave a presentation and we learnt that they need to earn £9,000,000 per year to stay operational. In each helicopter that goes out to a call they have a Doctor, a pilot and a paramedic.  The pilots are often ex-military and have first aid-training. They are able to help in cases of emergencies but are often focused on looking after the helicopter which on occasions may have to land on very difficult terrain. The Midlands service has recently purchased a new helicopter thanks to fundraising of £7,000,000.  We hope that our school fundraising can help towards future purchases and the great work of this charity.

At break and lunchtime the children in Prep took part in a bean-bag throw trying to get as many points as possible by landing a bean bag on different numbers. They also had fun guessing the number of sweets in a jar, balancing a 20p piece on a lemon in a bowl of water, drawing tickets from the tombola, as well as purchasing sweets and model airplanes.  After school St. Philip’s House parents lent a hand at a cake sale piled high with tasty goodies.  One particularly beautiful cake decorated in St. Philip’s red and sporting a helicopter raised £29 alone.  It was then time to cash up and see what had been raised.  With the help of the Smartie tube challenge which involved filling empty tubes with coins the current total is £1601.57.  St. Philip’s boys – you can still bring in your smartie tubes in if you haven’t already. You may be interested to know that you can get £38 worth of one pound coins in an empty tube!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this amazing total – you are all heroes!
