This week 12 Year 4 pupils were given the opportunity to participate in the inaugural Malvern St James Year 4 Team Maths Challenge. The children worked collaboratively in three groups of four pupils and competed against teams from other schools. The first round was a Group Challenge and involved an origami-based activity.  The teams followed instructions to create modules and then combined the modules to produce cubes. The aim was to construct as many finished cubes as possible and then balance them in a tower, which required accurate folding and mathematical reasoning. The second round was an exciting Mathematical Relay. The children worked in pairs and raced to complete problems and puzzles and submit them to a marking teacher. The Blue Coat teams all produced impressive performances, with one team being placed third, and another team winning the Challenge!
