A busy and successful year of music-making was celebrated on Thursday night with a wonderful Summer Concert in the School Hall. The culmination of a busy term of rehearsal and practice in both Prep and Pre-Prep was certainly a treat for the audience, who enjoyed a delightful evening of music.

The Guitar Ensemble transported us to sunny Spain with their lovely performance of ‘Paysage Ibérique’ before the Brass ensemble gave two heart-warming performances of ‘I’ve Got My Eye on You’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. Then came two delightful performances from the Flute Ensemble before the Jazz Band got everyone’s toes tapping with their rendition of ‘Something Got Me Started’. The Pre-Prep string ensemble ‘Fiddlesticks’  should be congratulated on giving a wonderful first performance, followed by ‘Vivace’ who showed the great depth of musical talent coming through the school from Pre-Prep. The Wind Band gave a stirring performance of ‘You Raise Me Up’, showing depth of tone and wonderful musicianship, with the Senior Strings then giving a beautifully regal performance of ‘The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’. The evening ended on a high with the a wonderful rendition of ‘The Bare Necessities’ from the BCS Orchestra, displaying the incredible talent across all year groups and within all sections of the orchestra. With closed eyes it would certainly have been hard to tell that the musicians were all aged 11 and under!

A special mention must be made to the Year 6 leavers for whom this was their last musical performance at BCS. Thank you for the wonderful contribution you have made to the BCS Music department over the years and you will be sorely missed!

Over 400 individual performances have taken place this year in our Morning Recital and Prelude Concert series alone. What an exciting year of music making it has been. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Akehurst and the Visiting Music Team for their dedication, professionalism and encouragement invested in the children this year. Thank you, too, to the parents who have encouraged the children to practice hard and for all the support throughout the year.

Mr Nicklin
