All the girls were excited as we arrived at St Edward’s School, Oxford for our first tournament versus many schools that we had not played before. We started strongly with an excellent win over Northampton High Junior School with all players winning tackles and driving forwards with the ball. We then played overall winners Fairfield in our league and lost only 2-0 from two goals where we were caught on the break. Although we had most of the play we just could not find the back of the net. Our next match was versus Highfield Prep. They got an unexpected goal and, although we penned them in their half and created fantastic goal scoring opportunities, we just could not get the ball in the net. This meant we had to win or draw our final league match or we could have been going home.

We played end to end hockey against St Hugh’s and both teams created chances and defended hard. This was a fantastic display of U11 girls hockey. The match finished 0-0 and we went through to the Plate competition. This was now a knock out competition. I knew we were a strong team and had the potential to win this competition. We started off against Newland House and just dominated this match from start to finish, winning 5-0. Our next match in the semi-finals was against Eagle House. They were tough competition as they came back to make the score 1-1. We managed to dig down further and find extra energy and scored in the final minute to take us through to the final.

With limited time between the semis and final the team had a quick drink and met Headington Prep. Wow what a match! Again we played some cracking hockey and defended like our lives depended on it. The girls could not have ran, tackled or given anymore effort on that pitch. They did the whole school proud with how they played. Unfortunately we lost in the final but the growth of these girls who have only been playing on astro since October 2017 is phenomenal and they got a well deserved silver medal for their efforts.
