RUGBY
U10A Rugby V Solihull
Date: Tuesday 19th November
Result: BCS 20-30 Solihull
Report: Blue Coat got off to a slow start and a few missed tackles and sloppy work at the break down gave Solihull an early lead. As the game progressed we began to run with more determination and were quicker to support the ball carrier and secure the ball. In the second half we had over 80% of the possession but just couldn’t break through Solihull’s solid defence. The boys played much better in the second half and were unlucky not to be rewarded with a few tries. To improve, we need to attack the space, try to beat the defender and off load past the point of contact to a player running onto the ball.

U9 Rugby House Matches
Date: Tuesday 20th November
Result: A – St Philip’s 20 St George’s 20 B – St Philip’s 15 St George’s 30
Most Valued Player: As – Jai Lewis and Harry Forty are progressing nicely. Bs – Daniel Du led the way in his aggressive tackling.
Report: The U9s looked awesome in their house colour shirts and valiantly played for their house. Conditions proved difficult as a slippery ball and cold conditions created tough handling and plenty of knock ons. Team defence was a real positive with sides getting to the 7 tackle count numerous times. In the As both were never a try away from each other, and with such a low try count showed how attritional the game was. Sitting down over match tea, the games were played in the right spirit and we continue to grow our rugby ability.

U10A Hockey v Winterfold
Date: Tuesday 19th November
Result: BCS 1 – Winterfold 6
Report: This was an interesting mix of opposition. Winterfold were physically strong and just like us ever improving on a new AstroTurf. Indira Singh & Sofia Philips were stand out performers as we played 5 a side to get everyone playing on smaller pitches. They carried the ball with attacking intent and created good chances in front of goal. The girls still need to up the intensity and willingness to win possession in 50-50 challenges. They should also aim for the confidence to get the ball down and play.
Scorer: Indira Singh

U10C Hockey v Winterfold
Date: Tuesday 19th November
Result: BCS 0- 8 Winterfold
Most Valued Player: Ishani Shah
Report: All of the U10s made their way to Winterfold House School yesterday afternoon. The C team were up against Winterfolds U11B team, so tough opposition. This was a really great experience for the girls to perform under pressure and although the score was 0-8 it really doesn’t reflect the way the girls played. Once the girls had settled there were some good examples of space and moving with the ball. However, Winterfold had a really strong defence and we were unable to push past their defensive line, stopping us from having many shots on goal. Player of the match went to Ishani Shah, but all of you played really well – a good effort ladies!

U9B Hockey v King’s St Alban’s
Date: Tuesday 20th November
Result: BCS 7-0 King’s St Alban’s
Most Valued Player: Emily Smallwood
Report: Blue Coat put on an impressive performance tackling hard and denying King’s any time on the ball. The girls were relentless in the D, hitting it hard into the goal and persevering until it went in. In the second half we began to spread out a bit more and pass the ball and were rewarded with a few great team goals. Well done girls!

U10 D Hockey v Winterfold Plus
Date: Monday 19th November
Result: BCS 1-1 Winterfold Plus
Most Valued Player: Harriet Paode
Report: We arrived at Winterfold to find that there was only 4 players in the opposition to play against us. So rather than having lots of players sitting off and playing 4 a side we decided to work together and play some of our girls with Winterfold. We played 10 minute thirds and as each third went on the girls got better and better. Layla was strong in the centre of the pitch working hard for her team. Harriet was making excellent runs down the wing and was linking well with Lyla who started as a forward. Jaya made some excellent saves in the third quarter as Winterfold Plus kept attacking our goal and we had to have some strong defending from Ananya, Maya and Humnah. Mayha played really well positionally and moved the ball quickly into her space and tried exceptionally hard to get the ball to Jia up front. Anya looked like she hadn’t been away with her strong tackling and dribbling forwards but unfortunately could not score a goal.
Scorer: Jia Samra (1)

U9A Hockey v King’s St Alban’s
Date: Tuesday 20th November
Result: BCS 1-2 King’s St Alban’s
Most Valued Player: Zuva Mumbengegwi- Redmond
Report: On a bitter cold afternoon Blue Coat girls made the journey to play against King’s St Alban’s. The girls were as enthusiastic as ever and raring to go. Deciding to play on smaller pitches so both games could play at the same time, the girls played 6 a side. Unusually, the girls got off to a slow start and conceded the first goal within the first couple of minutes. However, the girls used the space really well this week, particularly Caitlin Liew and Lucie Evans out on the wings. We need to now improve on our decision making when we receive the ball out wide to either dribble the ball forward or make another pass. Time to open up our vision girls! We fought back in the second half and scored, but King’s St Alban’s quickly scored again to finish the game 2-1.

U11C Hockey v WGJS
Date: Wednesday 21st November
Result: BCS 0-1 WGJS
Most Valued Player: Lauren Claridge
Report: The U11C team got off to a slow start enabling WGJS to take an early lead and score within the first few minutes. However, the girls came back fighting and although they did not manage to score much of the game was end to end. At times there were some lovely passages of play out from defence but a lot of the play was in the middle and the girls need to use the width of the pitch more to open up the space and take the advantage. Well done though ladies a good team effort.

U11 A Hockey v Various
Date: Wednesday 21st November
Report: We beat the overall winners in our league matches but with 2 goals disallowed in the league matches our goals for meant we managed to secure 3rd and 4th place play off. We were very strong against Moor Park and although they attacked twice we deservedly were the winners for 3rd place out of 14 Prep schools. The U11 A team have made fantastic strides this year in their hockey skills. It is great to see their passion grow for the game. This passion drives Bea to do a 20m sprint back to defend her goal or a dramatic diving save made from Daphne. It powers players on like Kate and Lexie even though they have sustained an injury and keeps players like Maya and Ojal focused and determined to win the ball back from the opposition. The mental strength of these young girls has impressed me massively and their desire to get better and train hard is remarkable, like Joanne pushing for places and throwing themselves into contested positions to deflect a shot, like Tara and Storm. It is this drive that these girls have applied throughout the term that I hope they take on to their final match against RGS, into netball term and through life. With this kind of attitude nothing will stop them!

U8 Hockey Festival
Date: Thursday 22nd November
Report: This was the first ever Hockey Festival held at BCS and 80 pupils from 3 different schools came together to show the hockey skills they had learnt over the term. The matches were done in a fun and friendly environment where goals were scored, some fantastic dribbling was seen, great tackles made and most importantly the feeling of being part of a team. Hockey was the winner this day as it was great to see so many young girls engaged in participating in sport and of course the excitement of hot chocolate at the end of the day just put the icing on the cake.

U11B Hockey v WGJS
Most Valued Player: Elspeth Martin
Report: A very exciting and competitive game of hockey. The girls really battled hard against a WGJS A team. Particular mention goes to Natasha Page and Lilly Cunney for fantastic work rate in the midfield, both tracking back and making numerous tackles. In attack we played the ball nicely up field and worked the ball into the D for Matilda to have a strike at goal and were unlucky not to score a few more goals, denied by their goalie who was awarded player of the match and made numerous fantastic saves.
