On Monday 25th February, there was a WOW treat in store for Year 2 to launch their new Science topic ‘Materials’. They visited the DT and Art room in Prep to have a go at felting and clay work, which linked in brilliantly with this topic. In the felting session, the children learnt about woollen fibres and how if agitated, the fibres would cling together and shrink. After choosing bright coloured fibres to make into a design, the children agitated them using hot soapy water. The children certainly needed lots of elbow grease! Once rinsed, they could see how their final design turned out and what had happened to the wool fibres.
In the clay session, the children looked at texture by pressing various objects into a slab of practice clay. After their initial explorations, they then marked a square tile with their own final abstract or pictorial design. The children were totally absorbed in this therapeutic, sensory activity. Year 2 would like to thank Mrs Lynn and Mrs Lambert Green for their time and resources. The children loved every minute of this Creative Art/Science experience. It was a fantastic springboard into the new half-term.
