On a soggy, wet Wednesday morning Year 1 ventured forth to Weston Park in Staffordshire. After the short journey to Shifnal we arrived to explore the delights of the 17th century country house with its wonderful toy collection. The children had the opportunity to dress up in Victorian clothing and play with period toys – none of which required batteries! A toy making workshop was popular – the children were tasked with turning a wooden spoon into a character of their choice. Using a variety of materials, princesses and spidermen emerged as popular, spoon-shaped characters. Before leaving the children got to explore the opulent house where they got a taste of what life would have been like as a wealthy earl or countess. Acting the part they played as Victorian children would with a variety of wooden outdoor toys on the cobbled paths. By the end of the day, the children left tired but eager to go home and play with their own toys.
