Teachers in Years 1 and 2 are encouraging their pupils to write an explanation or explain their mathematical problems to someone else, so that they develop a deeper understanding of the concept. Particular emphasis is being given to extending pupils’ reasoning and mathematical talk. Providing a verbal or written explanation not only helps pupils’ understanding but also makes maths lessons more interesting and fun. Pupils are provided with open-ended, rich tasks rather than closed problems that only have one correct answer. Talk, talk, talk!
