U10 Girls’ Hockey Hallfield Festival at Hallfield (A)
Player of the Match – The whole team (Alexandra Souter, Khadija Kamran, Karman Khatkar, Lara Willcox and Georgina Byrne)
The girls had a fun start to the season and they all had lots of touches of the ball. Karman stayed calm under pressure in goal and was excellent at clearing the ball wide. It was evident that the girls listened well to each other and reflected on their performance between play as they really improved throughout the festival. All the girls worked hard in attack and defence, and we now need to look at creating and moving into space.

U10 Girls’ Hockey Hallfield Festival at Hallfield (A)
Players of the Match: Aleyah Ahmed & Poppy Griffin with superb ball pace in their passing forward
We had so much fun in this festival with the girls having an early exposure to small sided games and learning new rules. Charli Clements was agile in goal, closing down space of the attacker consistently and kick clearing with speed. Emily Smallwood and Harleena Grewal kept our width and did their best to get us moving forward but on small pitches you have to work so hard in attack and defence. However Poppy Griffin stood firm in defence with awesome flat stick tackles.

U9A Rugby Festival at RGS The Grange (A)
Player of the Match: Vivek Ratti
You would never had thought that this was the first match of the season in which contact was introduced! An exceptional performance from every pupil within the squad created a very promising start to the year. Remy Granger, Arjun Gill and Vivek Ratti created an unbreakable wall of defence bringing any opposition to the ground quickly. Terrific ball carrying and support play from James Longworth, Wilf Crow-Marcetic and Robert Miller created a quick and continuous attack in which the gain line was constantly broken. Well done to all the boys involved, making selection for the next game a very difficult decision.

U9B Rugby Festival at RGS The Grange (A)
Player of the Match: Ethan Graves for powerful running forward
Such a splendid afternoon in the sun, with the boys being fully exposed to transitional contact rugby. By game three, ball carriers were being tackled to the ground and players grew in confidence around the contact area. Jack Soundy in particular broke the line so fast in defence and put pressure on the ball carrier. Silas Saha was evasive in his running, and became so hard to tackle. We had strong performances v RGS The Grange, Warwick and King’s Hawford.

U9C Rugby Festival at RGS The Grange (A)
Player of the Match: Jia Wu
The boys had a terrific start to the season and were unbeaten across their four matches. It took some time in the first game to build up some confidence running with the ball, but once Jia Wu blitzed through the opposition defensive line to score the opening try, the side began to flourish. Krish Choudhary and Felix Powell were both immense in defence with some crunching tackles, and this made it very difficult for the opposition to break us down. Zayn Ahmad displayed some really fancy footwork throughout the afternoon, and always looked threatening with the ball in hand. Shawn Sen, Dev Wangi, Pranav R and Joey Z all made valuable contributions in what was a wonderful team effort in hot conditions. Well done, boys!

U11A Rugby v RGS The Grange (A)
Score: 15-15
Player of the Match: Freddie Trevis
In truth this was a game where both teams made lots of mistakes, but that’s ok, it was the first game of the season and it showed that we have a great group to work with. The boys need to adjust to the extra man on the pitch and the fact that being a year older means there is not as much space as there was at U10s. This means they will have to work more as a team rather than relying on individual excellence. As a group they need to not put to much pressure on themselves to win and focus on the process of winning. The 3-3 score was a fair reflection of the game even if there were a few Craig Joubert moments!

U11B Rugby v RGS The Grange (A)
Player of the Match: Raihan Ahmed – game changing performance when he came on, full of powerful running
Score: 30-30
On a beautiful afternoon at RGS The Grange our B team had a superb start to the season. Both teams had fluent runners, with one RGS player, running in 4 tries from his own half. But it was our strength and physicality at the ruck that helped break lines and move forward through tackles. The biggest challenge is to pass before contact to allow for that continuity and we did get better at this as the game progressed. Yusuf Douis was superb, ripping possession for Blue Coat, Richard Mahlberg Schilling was faultless in the ruck area. Great fun!

U11C Rugby v RGS The Grange (A)
Player of the Match: Macca Ros-Nalugon
Score: 30 – 30
The boys responded well to a steep learning curve, taking on board the new adaptations to the game which included scrums, kicking and more players in the ruck. Zain Ahmed, Bertie Chandler and Rishul Marrie provided superb support within the breakdown ensuring the ball is well protected. Simeon Hughes and James Padley utilised the space and their speed to great effect scoring several tries in the corner. My favourite moment of the game saw RGS have up to 9 attempts of scoring within our own 5m for BCS to come away with the ball through a tremendous display of defensive work.

U11A Girls’ Hockey v King’s St Alban’s (H)
Score: 5-0
Scoreers: Indira (3), Sofia (1), Amrita (1)
Player of the Match: S Phillips
This was a good start to the girls hockey season with a result that I wasn’t expecting so early in the term. I was pleasantly surprised how well the team had taken on board what had been coached in the after-school session. The corners in particular were performed with real efficiency and our precision proved too much for the opposition as we scored from 2. Sofia and Indira did exactly what I asked from them and it paid off. Gloriosa intercepted a pass and broke free making an excellent forward drive towards goal and then played the ball into Indira to score. With the pressure mounting on St Alban’s the midfield of Amrita, Sofia and Gloriosa continued to press, allowing for Jessie and Indira to play high and keep St Alban’s in their own half. Simran was solid in defence and even took a knock to the head with a stick and soldiered on for her team. Delina did exactly what I asked of her coming on and playing either wing and tracking back to make tackles. Harriet did really well in her first time in goal, although she is yet to be really tested as King St Alban’s did not really get any time to shoot. A great start for the girls!

U11B Girls’ Hockey v King’s St Alban’s (H)
Score: 0-0
Player of the Match: Holly Willson
Having just seen their peers perform the B team were up and ready and once they started they just did not stop. The work rate of the team was incredible with Elsie and Maggie running up and down the wings in attack and defence. Ishani and Anya were both solid in the middle creating some good forward chances. Anya B continued to run the ball from the back and was working well with Maggie down the right and Holly did her best to get onto the crosses but the goal just would not come. Glory was strong at the back and we continued to play most of our hockey in the opposition’s half. Ananya did not get any chance to be involved in the game but this was down to the strong tackles that just kept St Alban’s back. This was a promising start for this team and hopefully next week we will score a goal from the chances created.

U10A & U11A Swimming Gala v Eversfield School (H)
Result: 85 – 65
Players of the Match: Harry Forty and Samuel Tan
Our first gala of the academic year saw us welcome Eversfield to Blue Coat in what always promised to be an exciting fixture. Our U10 and U11 A team were well prepared from this week’s first swim squad session, after Mr Kelly had placed an emphasis on good technique and race skills. Throughout the evening, Blue Coat swimmers demonstrated this, with excellent starts, finishes and all round good stroke technique. We had some strong performances, particuary from Harry Forty and Samuel Tan who swam up in the U11 A age group. Overall the event finished Blue Coat 85 – 65 Eversfield. Well done swimmers!
Mr Kelly
