U11A Girls’ Hockey v Winterfold House School (H)

Result: 3-0

Scorer(s): Indi (2) Sofia (1)

Player of the Match: Delina Elias

A marked improvement today against well suited opposition for the U11A team against Winterfold. The girls were raring to go, as ever. They knew what they needed to execute as a team and tried hard to put it into action straight away. Unfortunately, at the start the girls were slow to react and really needed to anticipate where they needed to be next before the opposition had time to close them down. This prevented them bringing the ball up the pitch on a number of occasions within the first 10 minutes. However, after some direction from the sideline the girls managed to skilfully bring the ball down as a team and score their first goal, lifting their heads. Growing in confidence as the game went on, the girls put a lot more pressure on the Winterfold players and took the ball away from them a number of times. Delina Elias in particular had a strong defensive game and enabled the second goal to be scored by taking the ball confidently away from Winterfold and then bringing the ball down the pitch before passing successfully to Sofia Philips, who showed real composure on the ball even when under pressure making a pass to Indira Singh, who swept the ball into goal. A lovely passage of play which was beautiful to watch. Final score was 3-0 to BCS and player of the match was awarded to Delina Elias. A well-deserved win. Let’s keep this winning streak up!

U11C Girls’ Hockey v Winterfold House School (H)

Result: 2-1

Scorer(s): Maggie (1), Elsie (1)

Player of the Match: Maggie L

After watching the A’s play this team set off with real intent to drive the ball forwards and score with some fast breaking especially from Elsie and Maggie. Maysoon tackled hard from the front making it hard for Winterfold to hit the ball out. Pressure was applied in the middle of the pitch with Anya making some strong tackles and Eva my little “lionheart” tracking back constantly to win the ball back for her team showing her strong determination. Defensively, we looked strong with Samah and Anjali clearing the ball out away from Ananya in goal. We now need to continue to be disciplined in our positions as at times we did fail to mark the player and got drawn into the ball.

U9 Girls’ Hockey Festival at BCS

Result: Played 4, won 3 drew 1

Player of the Match: Li Wan

A fantastic afternoon of hockey at Birmingham University. The girls attacked at pace and were delentless in the tackle, getting low, staying strong and hassling the ball carrier. Winning our first 3 games convinsingling with some excellent hard shots at goal by Anusha Singh and some great team play by Li Wan to cross the ball into the D, Our final game was against our rival Blue Coat team who had also not lost. An end to end battle both teams close to scoring but valiant defence keeping both teams out, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The girls worked really hard, got to play lots of hockey and had a very enjoyable afternoon. To improve we need to trust our teams mates and give the early pass but to do this we need to make attacking runs forward into space.

U9 Girls’ Hockey Festival at BCS

Result: Played 4, won 3 drew 1

Player of the Match: Elaine Nguyen

Miss Crews organised our first U9 hockey festival and ran off site at the University. We had 4 schools in attendance and got full use of the university hockey astro. It was fantastics to see our mixed side using the width and developing their knowledge of positional play. I was really pleased to see the girls all working hard for each other and being confident holding and playing as a team. We scored 11 goals in total over the 4 matches and conceded 0. This was a great event and hopefully the girls’ who participated enjoyed the event and the privilege of playing at the university.

U9 Blue Rugby v Winterfold House School (H)

Result: BCS 40 – 40 Winterfold

Player of the Match: Harry Fraser

It was a pleasure to watch how much some of our pupils have developed in the last 7 weeks of Rugby. I was thoroughly impressed with the physical nature of the tackling and the hunting down of the ball from Harry Fraser, Kanav Biswas, Jonty Scurlock and Stefan Claridge. BCS were able to put our visitors under a lot of early pressure moving forwards in small packs working together to bring the ball carrier down. Their strong runners were able to drag in multiple defenders leaving us vulnerable when the ball was quickly off loaded. However BCS dusted themselves off and ran hard with the ball with good support. We need to remain aware of our surrounding at times and avoid running into the side lines. A strong team performance.

U9C Rugby v Winterfold House School (H)

Result: BCS 40 – 15 Winterfold

Player of the Match: Jack Soundy for his electric speed on the ball

Good fun this tag belt match, played across a full size U9 pitch. Blue Coat started the try count early, with excellent passing out of contact through Lucius Proctor and Tom Cowley. Blake Bushell was effective in the tackle, using a dive, catch technique to pull the tag!

U11A Girls’ Hockey v Bromsgrove School (H)

Result: BCS 5-3 Bromsgrove

Scorers: Sophia (2), Inira (1), Jessie (1), Delina (1)

Player of the Match: Sophia P

This match was tightly contested right from the start however we managed to over power them in our attack with a great run from Jessie to play for Indira to score. Simran was holding the midfield defensively allowing Sofia to show her skills and drive forwards in attack with Gloriosa using her speed to keep the pressure on Bromsgrove. In the first half Glory and Jia were not really tested. However, in the second half we started to allow Bromsgrove to play and they came back and scored 2 goals in quick succession but we kept to the game plan and pulled ahead once more with Delina poaching Indi’s shot at the end to finish up with a good 5-3 win.

U11B Girls’ Hockey v Bromsgrove School (H)

Result: BCS 2-0 Bromsgrove

Scorers: Elsie (1), Anya B (1)

Player of the Match: Elsie F

The B team are really developing in positional play and you can see their confidence and determination growing each game we play. In the first half although we created many chances it was 0-0 and Holly was working like a horse up and down the astro for her team. In the second half I said to Elsie “we just need to score some goals” and she obliged, smashing one into the back of the net to get us off the mark. Amrita, Ishani and Maggie were proving hard to get passed in the middle with Samah trying to make some tackles on the wing. Priyam stood firm at the back and although they had one shot Ananya pulled off a good save to keep us ahead. After more battling and dribbling forwards the ball came out eventually to Anya who took a fantastic sweep at the ball to push it into the corner of the goal. A really good team win for us today.

U10A Rugby v Bromsgrove School (H)

Result: BCS 5-10 Bromsgrove

Player of the Match: Sam Hodges – excellent tackles

A very competitive game of rugby, both teams running hard and protecting the ball well at the break down. The Blue Coat boys really stepped up in defence today, putting their bodies on the line, making some excellent tackles and competing in the rucks. In attack we ran hard with the ball and looked to offload but to improve we need to look up, identify space and move the ball early. A great game, the boys really did themselves proud.

U10B Rugby v Bromsgrove School (H)

Result: BCS 15 – 30 Bromsgrove

Player of the Match: Joel Drake/Jenson Fickert

A great performance against a well drilled side with a score line which doesn’t truly reflect how the game went. BCS were able to compete physically with exceptional tackling especially from Joel Drake and Jenson Fickert who were able to produce several try saving tackles. The U10’s showed a good understanding at the breakdown and were able to recycle the ball well. The difference between the teams was the body position going into the tackle. BCS need to focus on staying low and looking after the ball rather than running with ball out in front of them and having it stripped out of their hands. A lot of positives that should be celebrated with today’s performance with plenty to focus on for the next game.

U10C Rugby v Bromsgrove School (H)

Result: BCS 55 – 15 Bromsgrove

Player of the Match: Yasin Elashry

The 8 boys who took to the pitch must be commended highly for a fantastic display of rugby against a good rugby side. Every time a BCS player received the ball, they ran with purpose to ensure they got past the gain line. In the second half, the Bromsgrove defence became stronger but the side adapted and began offloading the ball with skill. Defensively, the side were brave and each man contributed to this part of the game. When asked to stretch the defensive line across the pitch at half time, they listened well, which showed a continued desire to improve their game. Well done boys!

U11A Rugby v Bromsgrove School (A)

Result: BCS 5 – 35 Bromsgrove

Player of the Match: Hari Phillips

The U11s were beaten by a strong Bromsgrove side however I can’t help but feel that a number of the players seemed a bit in awe of the occasion and the opposition. A number only seem to come alive when they have the ball and they need to learn that their role as a team player is much greater than this. They need to support the ball carrier in contact better and also defend as a unit. To many times we had players hanging back and leaving the front line outnumbered. Hopefully they have learnt a valuable lesson from today and it has shown them the level of commitment needed if they want to challenge the top sides.

U11B Rugby v Bromsgrove School (A)

Result: BCS 20 – Bromsgrove 25

Player of the Match: Lemuel Adeji with the ball and Yusuf Douis without the ball

Fantastic performance from the B team who had to adjust with 4 absentees from the team on the day. Bertie Chandler and Simeon Hughes especially stepped up and really took a physical game to Bromsgrove. This was the tough part of the game, direct running and no where to hide, I was proud of how Blue Coat rose to the challenge. Lemuel Adjei had two fantastic run away tries, breaking through central lines. And Yusuf Douis was fearless int he tackle, even against his biggest opponent, he tackled with superb technique. We were always chasing the game by one try and it would’ve been fitting to get that final one to tie the game.

U11C Rugby v Bromsgrove School (A)

Result: BCS 40 – Bromsgrove 25

Scorers: Ben C (5), James P (2), Rayyan A (1)

Player of the Match: Ben Carberry

A fantastic second half of Rugby compensated for a poor performance in the first, where we went into half time 3 tries down. After a strong, but fair team talk from Mr Kelly the boys had a game plan and some strategy to take to Bromsgrove. Ben Carberry came alive, using his pace to out run the defence of Bromsgrove and score 5 tries, earning him man of the match. James Padley captained the team well, supporting his team mates, organising attacking and defensive formations and rallying the team to a superb second half of rugby! Oje made some great tackles, supported by Henry de Bono who stepped up to play in the C team. Overall it was a fantastic game and a well deserved win for Blue Coat!

U11C Girls’ Hockey v Bromsgrove School (A)

Result: BCS-0 – Bromsgrove 3

Player of the Match: Maysoon Haroon

A wet and windy afternoon of hockey, but the girls were excited to play some hockey against an U10A team. Despite the opposition being younger, they were confident and aggressive on and off the ball. Making quick interceptions and moving the ball up the pitch easily past our defenders. Once Blue Coat girls settled into the game we were marking a lot better. Unfortunately, when the girls did make an interception they tried to force the ball down the middle of the pitch rather than using the width, this resulted in Bromsgrove intercepting the ball. At half time the score was 0-2 to Bromsgrove. Half time talk focused on the basics, getting the girls to keep their shape, keeping their sticks on the ground and having confidence on and off the ball. It’s amazing, how focusing on the simple things can make such a difference. They went out in the second half and played much better Hockey. The score didn’t reflect how much they improved. A really good effort girls. Final score was 0-3 to Bromsgrove.

U11D Girls’ Hockey v Bromsgrove School (A)

Result: BCS 1- Bromsgrove 0

Scorer: Tabitha Vlok (1)

Player of the Match: Layla Smith

The girls played against an U10B team and despite having most of the game played in their attacking half only managed to get one goal. They were not at their best today in the miserable weather and didn’t manage to keep to the diamond attacking format as the other team were less experienced and kept playing down the line over the inner centre of the pitch, which threw the dynamics of the game for our Blue Coat girls. The girls however did manage to keep the ball away from our goalie who hardly saw any action today, but they do need to look before they hit the ball so that they do not give the ball straight back to the opponents.

U8A + U9A Swimming Gala v Eversfield School (A)

Result: BCS 58 – Eversfield 48

Player of the Match: U9 A Boys Team

What a great swimming gala we were witness to, with our U8 team swimming for Blue Coat for the very first time! Considering it was their first time they did themselves proud, with attempts at diving and demonstrating a good technique on all their strokes. The U8’s overcame their nerves and were successful over Eversfield. Our more experienced U9’s took it in their stride and the boys were dominant in all their races. Overall it was another successful swimming gala for Blue Coat, with the score finishing BCS 58 – Eversfield 48.
