This has been a busy week in the Music Department. Our Music Scholars performed our first virtual concert of the term and the standard of musicianship was exceptional. We pre-recorded each performance last week and shared the video with Prep pupils during their Year Group assemblies this week. So many pupils have commented on just how much they enjoyed the concert; I hope they are inspired to keep up their own practice by our talented Scholars. You can see their brilliant performances below.
We also hope this will inspire the next generation of Music Scholars! Applications are welcome from any current Year 2 pupils who wish to apply for a Music Scholarship to join Year 3 in September 2021. Children should be aiming towards Grade 2 standard and have been learning their instrument for a minimum of 12 months. Auditions will be held with Mr Nicklin and Mrs Creaton on Thursday 11th February 2021. Further details can be found here or please get in touch with Mrs Kearney admissions@thebluecoatschool.com.
What’s more, on Wednesday Year 6 enjoyed an Enrichment Experience workshop from the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Alex Neale. Alex is Co-Principal Percussionist with the BBCSO and gave the pupils an energising and exciting 60-minute workshop based around the music of John Adams. Adams’ ‘Short Ride in a Fast Machine’ is a dynamic and thrilling work, and we saw Alex performing the piece in a 2014 Prom with the BBCSO which featured the full might of the percussion section. I was impressed with the thoughtful and insightful interactions by the pupils in the Q and A session at the end of the workshop.
