U11A Boys’ House Rugby Matches

St Philip’s 10 – St George’s 9

Player of the Match: Sam Hodges

The Year 6 Wasps House match was a superb finale to a very different yet still rewarding rugby season. Whilst the boys have missed out on fixtures due to COVID-19 we have made sure they have had plenty of competitive opportunities through intra and house matches. This House match had plenty of drama and even a “sting” in the tail! St George’s started brightly with Jai Lewis and Harry Forty going forward and creating great opportunities for others. However St Philip’s also had chances and through Toby and Oliver Smoldon and the irrepressible Sam Hodges. They managed to get to half time only losing by 2 scores. After half time though St George’s flew into a commanding lead with more tries from Marcus Wigg, Jai and Harry. St Philip’s looked deflated and a number of players seemed to have given up, thankfully driven on by what can only be described as a force of nature they slowly crept back into the match. As the margin narrowed the handling errors from St George’s increased. St Philip’s sensed blood and with a minute remaining as St George’s turned their backs Konark Basu ran the length of the field to score. There was time for one last attack but sadly St George’s couldn’t quite score and St Philip’s won 10-9. St Philip’s force of nature was Sam Hodges who displayed great perseverance when St Philip’s were losing and drove his team forward through unrelenting commitment. His positive perseverance and mental fortitude were a lesson for all the boys on both sides and this is why he was deservedly named Man of the Match.

U11B Boys’ House Rugby Matches

St George’s 15 – 25 St Philip’s

Player of the Match: Aiden Verma

In a very close contest it was St Philip’s were emerged as the winners in an enthralling game of Rugby. In a slow start with pupils not adapting to the width of the pitch and creating width and depth in their attacking lines both teams managed to score some early tries in an even contest. After the end of the first third St Philip’s adapted well and must have given themselves a stern team talk as they came out with some aggressive direct running, particularly from Aiden who managed to score a couple of tries. St George’s responded and showed better spatial awareness and this created some try scoring opportunities that were taken to stay in the game. St Philip’s however in the final third of the game held a firm defensive wall and managed to keep out repeated St George’s attacks to hold onto the victory. A great game played in an excellent spirit!

U11A Girls’ House Hockey Matches

St Monica’s 4-5 St Margaret’s

Goals: Zuva (4) Harleena (1), Emily (2), Alex (1), Imogen B (1) A Ahmed

Player of the Match: H Grewal

Block tackles, fast turnovers, defensive goal line clearances and slap shots, this match had it all! What a way for these girls to finish their last ever House hockey matches at BCS. There was sheer grit and determination from both teams who were out for the win. Although it was St Margaret’s who took the glory in the end, all of the girls came out as winners. St Monica’s caught St Margaret’s by surprise as they took an early lead with Khadija, Kenza and Zuva dominating the middle of the pitch. The team in blue then moved tactically as Lara and Poppy were primed to mark key players out of the game. Battle commenced and each team took turns to drive forwards with fabulous runs from Emily and Imogen and great blocks from Aleyah and Connie. St Margaret’s were under pressure towards the end as Alex was driving them on to play until the end. Players were grunting as they used every ounce of energy they had left to clear the ball and prevent a goal. Every player left the Astro on Wednesday having genuinely given their all for their House. A great game to be part of!

A brilliant way to finish the term of Hockey. The girls showed progress and strength behind the ball. Looking at the number of people that scored it showed how much of a team effort it was. The girls fought right to the bitter end, this grit and determination made it into a really good game to watch. At half time the score was 3-1 to St Margaret’s. However, St Monica’s came back fighting and scored four goals one after the another. The end result finished with a draw, St Monica’s not letting St Margaret’s run away with it. Well done girls a lovely way to end the season.

U10A Boys’ House Rugby Matches

St Philip’s 15-20 St George’s

Player of the Match: Remy Granger

What a way to end the Rugby season. The score line represented how even the two teams have been, with St Philip’s unable to capitalise on a few missed opportunities. St George’s took the more aggressive approach, running good lines and using the offloads quickly and efficiently. St Philip’s took the safer approach playing one up Rugby down the middle of the field. Both teams showed a progression in understanding with regards to game play so it was interesting to see how the two houses used different strategies. There was strong running with the ball from the likes of Kanav Biswas, Silas Saha and Karam Gill from St Philip’s, equally St George’s were able to use the space through passing from Wilf Crow-Marcetic, Robert Miller and Vivek Ratti. Well done to all the boys for an excellent Rugby season.

St Philip’s 20-15 St George’s

Player of the Match: Sai Chauhan

A fantastic way to end the season. The score line represented how even the two teams have been, with St George’s unable to capitalise on a dominant last third of the match. St George’s showed aggression early on in the game running good lines and passing quickly, this led to a two try lead at the end of the first third. St Philip’s must have had a good team talk at the end of the first third and came out flying at the start of the second third scoring two quick tries. This was down to direct forward running and great timing of passes to eliminate the defender. The scores were level going into the final third and again St Philip’s came out the blocks flying with two quick tries to give themselves a two try lead. In response St George’s rolled up their sleeves and responded with an immediate try to be within one last effort. They were met by a wall of red as the St Philip’s defence held firm and grasped to keep the St George’s attack out. A great way to finish and a well done to all the boys for an excellent Rugby season.

U10C Boys’ House Rugby Matches

St Philip’s 40-40 St George’s

In the U10 Warriors House match both teams put in fantastic performances in what was another nail biting encounter. St George’s stormed into an early lead thanks to some fantastic support play by Louis Thornwell and Mohammed Ismael. However St Philip’s struck back thanks to some great evasive running from Jacob Romano and Zayn Ahmed. Joey Zhou was again showing good speed and kept St George’s ahead going into half time. St Philip’s came out with real intent in the 2nd half with Pranav showing a real turn of speed. With 1 minute remaining on the clock Blake Bushell scored a try to bring the scores level at 8 a-piece. There was time for one last attack but unfortunately St Philip’s just missed out, sliding into touch by the corner flag. The final whistle blew and in fairness a draw was a fair result. Both teams have showed huge improvement since the last house match before half term and deserve great praise for their effort and understanding. Special mention to Krish Choudhary for his superb support play and Rayan Anderson for his hard work and determination in keeping going through.

U10A Girls’ House Hockey Matches

St Margaret’s 2 -1 St Monica’s

Scorers: Li Wan (2), Susie Tomlinson (1) Rosa Lester

Player of the Match: Mira Amlani

All of St Margaret’s girls want to give Mrs Lynn a great send off at the end of this term and played full of determination not to let her down. With real St Margaret’s spirit the girls battled in their tackles and Li broke free and showed great dribbling prowess to score confidentently. St Monica’s girls raised both their mindset and their play and started to work as a team building attacking play from Beatrice at the back, whilst Elaine was doing a tremendous job marking Li. With St Monica’s now playing more tactical Susie scored a fantastic individual goal. Throughout the match tackles were determined, calm and competitive with neither defence looking pressured until Nush showed true grace as she moved with the ball down the pitch, passing to Li for her next goal. I am looking forward to performance group starting again in the near future as this group of girls have the characteristics and dynamics that make a great team and my job the best job in the world!

Scorer: Maysahm Hamilton (3)

Player of the Match: Maysahm Hamilton

This game was fast and furious. The girls were so eager to play the ball that was end to end to start with but no one was able to finish. As time went on the girls settled into the game and played with a little more structure and space. This resulted in the ball not being accidentally kicked and more passing opportunities arising. It would be great if more of the girls could retain knowledge of the rules as this slows the game down from its natural pace. Overall is was a good game and although 3-0 it was a fight for this result. Well done to each and everyone of you

U9A Boys’ House Rugby Matches

St Philip’s 20 – 25 St George’s

Player of the Match: Aditya Solanki

In a pulsating game of Rugby played at an extremely high tempo and intensity it was St George’s who took the victory in the U9 House Rugby fixture. In the first third St Philip’s started well scoring an early try showing some excellent range of passing skills and strong forward running. Despite being under pressure the St George’s defence held firm under a lot of pressure to only be one try down after the first third. In the second third St George’s must have given themselves a stern team talk as they came out a different team in attack looking organised in attack using width a depth successfully which led to two tries being scored. St Philip’s responded with a well executed try just before the end of the second third to leave the score level. What followed was an exciting third to Rugby with both teams being creative in attack and determined and committed in defence. However, St George’s managed to take the lead and maintain it due to Scrum Half Aditya showing great vision to put in the winger for a try. St Philip’s responded and despite playing 5 minutes over time by maintaining possession of the ball the wall of the St George’s defence held firm to take the 25-20 victory. A great game of Rugby displayed by great sporting characteristics!

U9B Boys’ House Rugby Matches

The Year 4 Chiefs house match was a pulsating affair with both teams showing excellent commitment and effort. St Philip’s started the brighter of the two teams with Shaan Samra and Tahran Bahia supporting the elusive Leon Seymour who scorched the St George’s defence early. This seemed to awaken the St George’s big guns with Max Horwitch-Smith and James Armstrong causing mayhem in the St Philip’s defence with some strong powerful running. William Nicholson always seemed to be in support to gather the final pass and dive over for a try. The match went back and forth until a decisive turnover led to another St George’s score right near the end giving them a 10-8 victory. The game was played in a fantastic spirit with all the boys showing great sportsmanship. Taran Bahia was superb for St Philip’s showing great tactical awareness but also great resilience in adversity. William Nicholson and Toby Agadagba both provided fantastic support for St George’s and if anything, the difference between the two sides was the collective effort of the St George’s team. Well done to all.

St Philip’s 40-40 St George’s

Player of the Match: Yang He

A score line which truly reflected how evenly matched these two teams were. St George’s took the early lead with Yang He and Daven Rawal running effectively and elusively into space. St Philip’s regrouped and kept their heads up which allowed Kabir Tajuria and Rayyan Jawaid to even the score lines again. I have been impressed with the perseverance of the two teams over this term and their ability to listen and respond to feedback. As a result, both teams had terrific support play which was quickly utilised by the ball carrier. The game was end to end with both teams giving everything until the final whistle, showing true BCS values. Well done all!

What a game! This has been my favourite Hockey match to umpire this year. It was full of action and determination from both sides. I could feel the nerves before the first whistle. It was really close the whole way through both teams showing moments of greatness and moments where they lacked structure. The girls created some fantastic passing opportunities showing a excellent knowledge of the game moving into their triangle structure, it was really great to see. It wasn’t until the last few minutes of the game where St Margaret’s dominated and stormed ahead scoring goal after goal, St Monica’s were just not quick enough to defend. This ended the game 7-2 to St Margaret’s. Well done to each and every one of the girls for the ability to take on feedback and show progress.

Lovely progress has been made by this set of girls and it was great to see them implementing what they have learnt into a competitive match. Some fantastic dribbling was shown by Priscilla and Aditi and clear grit and determination to score left Madalen with a goal but scraped knees. St Margaret’s had some lovely team play from Rubie to Sinai and Rosie scored a well deserved team goal. St Monica’s pushed hard for the win and Nanda and Lara defending well to keep driving their team forward for Madalen to score the winning goal.

A highly competitive match which demonstrated some very good hockey skills and great determination. St Monica’s took a very early lead with two fantastic goals! St.Margaret’s fought back but had several narrow misses. At the end of the half St Monica’s had a strong lead of four goals, but St Margaret’s showed great resilience and battled hard to achieve two goals in open play and almost a third which just brushed past the post in the final minute. An excellent house match with flowing play. Well played girls.

Goals galore scored in this very competitive match. Jo Lin was really pleasing to watch as she kept the ball under control moving through St Margaret’s defence to score. Some great battles were seen between Emily and Jo Lin as both tried to strive forwards for their team and make last ditch tackles. Anoushka made some good tackles on Neve and St Monica’s pushed through to score. Whilst St Margaret’s tried to gain possession some of the players would have benefited from maintaining a good solid grip on their stick so that they were stronger in their tackles. As the match progressed both positional play and passing improved and Jo Lin definitely deserved her hat trick.

U8A Boys’ House Rugby Matches

An end to end try fest as St George’s and St Philip’s battled it out on the Rugby pitch once again! The joys of the house match is that it shows the progress the boys have made over the last six weeks in a competitive setting. Every pupil was determined to get to the elusive white line and place the ball down. Some took the more direct route, running straight and somehow avoided getting tagged, some however managed to touch every blade of grass on the pitch before scoring! Either way, everyone showed determination and persistence in trying to score for their team. A special mention goes to man of the match Siyuan Le for his elusive running, quick passing and excellent support play! A great game no matter the result as everyone left the pitch with great big smiles with the prospect of eating some freshly baked flapjacks.

St George’s 50 – 50 St Philip’s

Player of the Match: Jayden Gupta

What a brilliant way to end a superb Rugby season. An end to end match filled with tries galore. However, the best bit was not the individual talent on the pitch but the team comradery and the boys’ ability to work together in order to succeed. More than ever, teams supported each other with support runners, players looked for passes earlier and as a result the game was so much faster. St Philip’s started the game the strongest team, as St George’s defence left ample space around the fringes. As always, the boys were able to respond to feedback quickly and soon spread the defence. As a result, they made some direct elusive running to quickly catch St Philip’s. The final score line was a true representation of how even the two teams were. Well done on a fantastic Rugby season!

U8C Boys’ House Rugby Matches

St George’s 35 – 50 St Philip’s

Player of the Match: Jack Hinton

In a fantastic game of Rugby it was St Philip’s who took the victory in a very closely contested game. St Philip’s came flying out from the start taking a two try lead due to some quick and agile work from Siyuan and Jack. St George’s responded well with direct running from Jago resulting in a try, but St Philip’s again responded to retain the two try lead with a great try from Aydin. St George’s after rolling their sleeves up showed determination and got back into the game with some direct running from James and great support play from Dhruv. This forced a response from St Philip’s and again agile and quick feet from Siyuan scored a double of tries. Heading into the final third St George’s needed a positive start and they got that from a lung busting run from Jago. However, this was their last try as Man of the Match Jack drove forward with great speed to break through the green wall. A fantastic game of Rugby from all players who have shown so much progression over the term which is full credit to their workrate and application towards the sport.

PROGRESS! The girls showed me today how much they have listened. The game was really close all the way through, both sides fighting for the ball right from the start. At the end of the third quarter the score was 3-3 and so still all to play for. St Monica’s switched a few players round, moving Ines into defence and gosh did she defend! Aaria and Annabel showed me time and time again their ability to look for space and position themselves ready to receive the next pass, demonstrating good teamwork for St Margaret’s. The team in blue definitely had more chances on goal in the last quarter but Ines kept sweeping the ball out, preventing them from scoring, it was brilliant to watch! However, in St Monica’s the brutal grit and determination of Mischa and Ella was a force to be reckoned with, always having the confidence to go towards the ball and fight back for possession. It was a great way to finish the Hockey season, it really was a team effort from each and every girl. Well done! The final score was a good reflection of the game 4-4.

Throughout this match both teams grew in positional understanding, at first it was very bunched with the ball hitting pupils’ feet on numerous occasions. After some teacher intervention there was more shape to the match and this enabled pupils to play in the space created. Arya M showed good dribbling skills as she drove forwards towards St Margaret’s goal and Olivia nearly scored. Not to be out done Elle won the ball with a fierce tackle and passed to Esther who dribbled and shot to score. The match became end to end with some great runs form Jaiya and Eleanor who were determined to help their team win. Unfortunately, St Margaret’s scored an own goal and St Monica’s were now drawing unwatil Florence took a cheeky shot and St Margaret’s won the match. The match was end to end at the start, but once the teams both settled and got over their nerves St Margaret’s stormed ahead with goal after goal leaving St Monica’s unable to defend.
