Our Year 6 children have begun their study of The Great War in English and Humanities. They have started by looking at why the war began, public sentiment at the time and how boys and young men were encouraged to enlist through the use of posters and poetry. In English, the children studied poems by Jessie Pope and Harold Begbie, as well as extracts from Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’. They then wrote diary entries capturing the events and emotions of the day they enlisted.
The teachers were most impressed with the work submitted and the work of four children has been selected to go into the Headmaster’s Book of Excellence. Only a few select entries make this special book each year. Congratulations go to Ria, Kenza, Antonella and Aiza for their superb writing, which can be read below.
