Year 1’s topic work this half term focused on the fictional tales of Katie Morag, written by Mairi Hedderwick. The children engaged well with the stories and enjoyed finding out about her adventures on the fictional Isle of Struay. As part of their English lessons, they worked across a range of genres including writing postcards and creating striking leaflets, using persuasive language to advertise all the wonderful things that could be done on the island. They also wrote instructions to make Katie a mat and an Easter basket. They designed a tartan kilt and made a stunning woven bag for her in creative arts. In humanities, they compared the Isle of Coll to Birmingham, looking at a range of maps to identify human and physical features as well as writing directions using a compass.
The end of the topic was celebrated with a curriculum enrichment Scottish Day. The children were very excited to take part in a range of activities which included Scottish dancing, making Loch Ness monster puppets, collaging a thistle, and decorating shortbread biscuits using a tartan pattern.
What a fun and memorable day!
