What better way to brighten the darkening winter nights than with an exploration of light?

This week Nursery and Reception each had a Wow Day to learn about Diwali, the ‘festival of lights’. In Nursery, the children shared their own experiences of celebrating Diwali and then listened to the story of Rama and Sita to understand the importance of light during Diwali. The children had a busy day of creative activities; making and decorating their very own Diya lamps using clay and decorative beads, embellishing a picture of Rama and Sita using coloured rice and sand and designing their own Rangoli patterns using watercolour paints.

The children in Reception explored light and dark by retelling the story of Rama and Sita, making a shadow puppet show, Diwali cards, and puppets of the characters. They can’t wait to see their artwork displayed too and have painted firework images and made special, treasured diva lamps. They have learned the story behind bonfire night and made melted chocolate apples to celebrate.

All of the classroom activities were a celebration of colour and light, creating experiences the children will remember. Happy Diwali!
