This week, 20 Year 6 pupils were given the opportunity to compete in a first round heat of Quiz Club’s National Mathematics Inter-School Quiz Championship. The rest of the year group also participated, but independently, in the audience.
The five teams of four pupils gave their best as they battled against more than one hundred teams from other schools. The questions ranged from high-pressure, speedy, mental arithmetic calculations to more complex problem solving challenges. For example: One 360 degree rotation of Earth represents a period of 24 hours. Calculate what 1 degree represents in time. The competition incorporated a wide range of core mathematics skills and concepts and the need to work tactically and collaboratively as a team.
All five Blue Coat teams achieved impressive overall scores, with three teams qualifying for the next round: the semi-final!
