Welcome to The Blue Coat School, Birmingham
The Blue Coat School is one of the best co-educational preparatory schools in the region. Boys and girls from age 3 to 11 receive a first-class education to achieve academic success, unique life experiences, new skills and knowledge, and excellent pastoral support in their important formative years.
The School celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2022, however, its current 15-acre leafy green site in Harborne dates back to 1930, when the school relocated three miles from the city centre.
Behind the impressive facade and clock tower, its state-of-the-art facilities include two brand new science laboratories; an impressive auditorium hall which regularly showcases music and drama performances; a range of grass and AstroTurf pitches for rugby, hockey, cricket, football and netball; a multi-purpose sports centre with a 25-metre indoor swimming pool, sports hall and studios; a computing suite equipped with Apple Macs, a green-screen recording studio and an audio recording room; a fully equipped music centre for creating and producing music; an art studio and a dedicated hub for Year 6 pupils to simulate a more independent and mature environment for moving up to senior school.
Additional features include a Forest School, an outdoor classroom, a school garden, two libraries and a recently refurbished dining hall.
Spiritual and wellbeing support is integral to upholding the fundamental Christian principles of the School. The on-site Chapel was renovated in 2022 and parents are welcomed into the weekly Chapel services.
All classrooms are equipped with an interactive whiteboard, Apple and Windows technology and an array of resources to achieve the School’s vision for limitless learning. Lessons in the classroom are complemented by outings including field courses and residential trips.
Children are prepared for scholarships and examinations to prestigious local schools. The school enjoys particular success in the 11+ examinations to Birmingham’s grammar schools and the schools of the King Edward VI Foundation.
The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage is followed for children aged 3 to 5, and the National Curriculum is incorporated at Key Stages 1 and 2 as part of a wider academic structure.
The School also offers exceptional facilities for before and after school and an extensive co-curricular programme to maximise the development of the whole child. The playgrounds feature an array of equipment including a bouldering wall; there are four Houses equipped with music and television facilities, table tennis and social spaces for before and after school socialisation. After school care, as well as after school activities are available until 5.45pm for all year groups. The rich co-curricular programme includes gymnastics, judo, creative arts, LAMDA, modern languages and chess.
The House system is also used to facilitate a sense of belonging for Prep children, as they take part in House competitions, charity events and social impact initiatives.
