The Annexe

The Annexe has two Nursery classrooms plus an early years play area for all Nursery children to enjoy.

All Saints and St Martin’s

These two Pre-Prep buildings house the other classrooms for Nursery to Year 2. There is also a Pre-Prep Library, a Pre-Prep Gym, Pre-Prep Music Room and Aftercare facilities for Pre-Prep.

All our Pre-Prep classrooms are large and spacious, fully equipped with resources for creative and dynamic teaching through traditional classroom activities, learning through play and specialist teaching.

The Prep school buildings have a vast array of facilities within them. From classrooms, to The Lighthouse, to the School Garden, there is so much to explore.

With the exception of Year 6, whose classrooms are in The Year 6 Centre, all of the Prep classrooms are in these buildings. Our classrooms are light and spacious, with plenty of space for the different styles of learning we facilitate at The Blue Coat School. This includes interactive whiteboards, space for written and group work, and space for using their individual iPad which all pupils receive at the beginning of Year 3.

The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse, plays a unique role in supporting children. The pastoral team which consists of dedicated members of pastoral staff, teaching staff and the Chaplain, offer support to all children through drop-in sessions.

Science Laboratories

The School has two new fully equipped laboratories to facilitate a limitless and practical exploration of science including life science, physical science and earth science.

Saville Music Centre

Recitals, BCS Young Musician of the Year and other termly concerts offer performance opportunities for our children. Through Ensembles and Music Groups, the children experience playing with their peers and this in turn raises their cognitive skills and improves them as players. BCS Musicians are held in high regard by senior schools and a number are awarded Music Scholarships each year.

Creative Arts Studio

The Creative Arts Studio is extensively equipped to introduce children to a range of practical ‘design and make’ tasks using a range of techniques and machinery in textiles, ceramics and woodwork, as well as traditional drawing and painting techniques. There are also food preparation facilities in the Studio to facilitate Food Technology lessons in the Prep curriculum.

Media Centre

Pupils in Prep receive specialist Computing lessons each week in our state-of-the-art Media Centre. Pupils use their own iPad for Computing lessons, which is equipped with a digital stylus and keyboard. Our Media Centre is fully equipped with Chroma Key (green screen) technology and a recording booth.

School Garden

A space for outdoor learning such as growing fruit and vegetables and learning the principles of gardening.

Year 6 pupils are taught in their own dedicated building which emulates a more mature learning environment to prepare them for senior school. Pupils will visit the other buildings across the site, such as Science Laboratories and Creative Arts Studio for specialist lessons. They will be responsible for travelling to and from different buildings on the School site to again increase their independence and time management skills.

The Year Group Hubs are open from 8am each morning, and from 4.05 to 5.45pm each evening. This before and after school care for Prep pupils is included in fees.

In summer 2023, the Year Group Hubs were renovated. Each one is specifically designed to be age-appropriate to that year group including bespoke graffiti artwork.

Each Hub has a games room, a craft room / iPad bar, a TV area, a reading area, a kitchen for after school snacks and plenty of space for socialising with friends.

The Year Group Hubs offer a home away from home, and a designated space for children to relax, socialise and distinguish from their time in the classroom.

The School Chapel was consecrated in 1932, shortly after the School moved from the city centre to its current Edgbaston premises. The Chapel was then rededicated by the Bishop of Birmingham in 2022 to celebrate the School’s 300th anniversary.

Whilst the School is of Church of England foundation, we welcome families of all faiths and none. Children will visit the Chapel each week which endeavours to inspire the children to embody the School’s motto ‘Grow in Grace’ which is illuminated in the stained glass window at the front of the Chapel.

Pupils visit Chapel once per week for a service, assembly or celebration. Pupils can also get involved in Chapel life through the Chapel Choir, as a Chapel Monitor and parents are warmly invited to attend weekly Chapel Services on a Friday morning.

The Chapel Choir sings at weekly Chapel services and joins the Choral Society and Birmingham Cathedral Choir for special events throughout the year.

Forest School is a magical place, nestled in the corner of the School site, for the children to enjoy learning in the great outdoors. It features a woodland area, a mud kitchen, firepit, an orchard, forest cottage and an outdoor classroom.

Blue Coat’s sporting facilities are unrivalled for a Prep School. On the school site, there is a 25-metre swimming pool; AstroTurf pitches; outdoor and indoor cricket nets; four-badminton-court-size sports hall; studios; grass pitches and a dedicated Pre-Prep Gym.

Sport is for all at Blue Coat. There is an inclusive programme of intra-school fixtures as well as home and away sports matches with other schools in the region. These matches provide Prep pupils with fantastic opportunities to develop not just their sporting ability, but a multitude of transferable skills such as resilience and respect.

The quality of the sports facilities means they are also utilised by partners such as Warwickshire County Cricket Club. They use our facilities for training their performance age groups. During the school holidays, the facilities are used by King’s Camp to offer holiday club provision for children over the age of 4.
