Igniting Curiosity and Potential

Vision

Using ideas generated from pupils, School Council, and from all school staff, we devised five Principles for our science teaching. These are the 5 key ideas that form the essence or fundamental base of our teaching and learning at The Blue Coat School. They should be evident in and encapsulate all that we do.

  • We are curious and questioning
  • We experiment and discover
  • We value mistakes
  • We learn something new
  • We are excited and inspired

Primary Science Quality Mark

We are a leading Prep school for science, as demonstrated by our PSQM Outreach award. Our new laboratories provides a wealth of opportunities for children to gain hands on experience of a wide range of scientific ideas and concepts. We have achieved the prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark, awarded for a significant commitment to teaching and learning of the subject.

In the LABORATORY

There are two brand new science laboratories which provide excellent spaces for pupils to learn all disciplines of science. The laboratories are fully equipped with individual workstations with gas and water for practical experiments.

An Extraordinary Lesson

Whilst every lesson is designed to develop pupils’ curiosity and scientific knowledge and understanding, we are proud of the immersive and holistic approach we take to learning at The Blue Coat School.

An extraordinary lesson could be a STEM competition, whereby pupils are set the challenge of designing and building structures to withstand frequent flooding. We invite guest lecturers into School to inspire the pupils, one example of an extraordinary guest lecture was all about the science of chocolate!

Science Fair

The Blue Coat School Science Fair is held annually during the Lent term. Firstly, Year 6 children are tasked to pose a question of a scientific nature. Then they must follow the method to research and investigate the problems associated with this question. They are supported and guided through the process, but the emphasis is very much centered on the children and how they answer the question they have posed.

A panel of external teachers and lecturers from neighbouring schools and universities judge the entries. We are proud to say that the judges always comment on the high standards achieved by our children.

LIFELONG LOVE OF LEARNING

Many of our pupils have a keen interest in science and want to extend their learning beyond the classroom. Therefore, we offer an after school club for Prep children.
