A leading Independent
School in Birmingham

At the age of 7 (Year 3), children move up into the Prep school. At Year 3, we add another form to the School, so there is always the opportunity to welcome new pupils at this stage.

Prep is an exciting time, the children begin to move around the campus for lessons and are introduced to even more specialist facilities including the ICT Suite, Music Centre, Science Laboratories and the Creative Arts Studio.

The Prep year groups also have their own newly refurbished Hubs to go to before and after school, offering a ‘home away from home’. These Hubs have games rooms, a TV room, toys, reading corners, craft areas, kitchens for after school snacks and outdoor spaces for playing games.

A Typical
Day in Prep

The School day in Prep is varied, with timetables packed with specialist lessons from English and Maths to Modern Languages and Games. No two days are the same at The Blue Coat School!

Arrival

Children can arrive at their Year Group Hub between 8am and 8.20am.

Lessons

Lessons begin at 8.50am after Tutor Time. Each Form’s timetable is different. They may begin the day with Maths, Computing, a Chapel Service or Humanities. There are two 50-minute lessons before morning break and two after break before lunch.

ERIC

This stands for ‘Everyone Reading In Class’. This 25-minute lesson either before or after lunch is a key component of the School day in Prep.

Lunch

Each year group goes to lunch in turn. The spacious Dining Hall invites pupils to make independent choices about what they want to eat. With a different delicious menu each day on a tri-weekly rotation, children have plenty of opportunities to try new things.

Afternoon

There are two lessons in the afternoon after lunch. One afternoon per week will be the year group’s Games afternoon and Friday afternoons are reserved for House assemblies and Projects (Year 3 and 4) or TED, Thinking, Exploring, Doing (Year 5 and 6).

After School

The School day finishes at 4.05pm for Prep. Pupils are taken to their Year Group Hubs where they can be collected, socialise with their friends, or go to an after school club. Both the Year Group Hub and activities run until 5.45pm.

OUR E-LEARNING
PLATFORM

The Blue Coat School has an outstanding academic record and our pupils make rapid progress in all areas of the curriculum.

The School monitors pupil’s progress with a bespoke assessment tool: The BCS Blue. It is a secure, web-based interface in which staff, parents and pupils can view achievements, progress, and the next steps. It has been shortlisted for two notable national awards which recognise The BCS Blue’s holistic approach and use of technology.

BCS Houses

In September 2023, six brand new mixed-gender Houses launched. Their names derive from the six elements which make up The Blue Coat School’s crest: Birmingham House, Cathedral House, Chandler House, Grace House, Lichfield House and School House.

Pastoral Care in Prep

Every member of staff at The Blue Coat School takes responsibility and prioritises the children’s wellbeing.

The Lighthouse is a sanctuary, snuggled into the core of the School, offering pupils a dedicated space that they can go to, at any time, to see the pastoral team.
