Through a variety of activities, children develop their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing – the principal components of National Curriculum English. Encouraging a love of books is central to the teaching of English. Children have access to the Prep Library Resource Centre, from which they may choose books that interest them, from a wide range of fiction and non-fiction.
The Blue Coat School is well resourced to teach the Academic Sciences. Teaching is delivered in the classroom, in the Science Laboratory and in the Media Suite.
In Mathematics the children are taught the concepts, skills and creative and critical thinking strategies that are essential in everyday life and contribute to learning across the curriculum, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology and Engineering.
Blue Coat pupils enjoy one lesson a week of Creative Arts, on a rotation between Art and Design and Design Technology. Both subjects are taught by specialist teachers in small groups of no more than ten pupils in purpose-built facilities.
Creativity is expressed through many aspects of the curriculum and during lessons pupils are given the opportunity to explore and develop their ideas. The works of famous artists provide inspiration and offer grounding in the history of art. Pupils contemplate work by contemporary artists, as well as art from different cultures.
