STEM

In Mathematics the children are taught the concepts, skills and creative and critical thinking strategies that are essential in everyday life and contribute to learning across the curriculum, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology and Engineering.

MATHS SKILLS

Mathematics teaching at The Blue Coat School enables the children to use the numbers, patterns and shapes they can see in the world around them.  They are taught to handle data and to utilise digital technologies.  They develop their logical reasoning skills though investigation and problem solving.  The children communicate their ideas using symbols, diagrams and spoken and written language.

CONFIDENT MATHEMATICIANS

Our teachers have a real passion for Mathematics and aim to promote enjoyment and enthusiasm through engaging mental activities, practical tasks, enquiry, exploration and discussion.  Our vision is for the children to leave The Blue Coat School as confident and highly-competent mathematicians with a depth of understanding of the subject and the ability to apply their learning.

SETTING

We cover all aspects of the National Curriculum for Mathematics and extend and enrich our curriculum with a variety of challenges and events, utilising links with other subject areas.  In Prep, the children are set for Mathematics lessons to ensure appropriate challenge for each and every child.  Teaching groups are small.  The results are impressive.

COMPETITIONS

The children have the opportunity to represent the School in several Mathematics competitions. For example, in 2018, Year 4 pupils won the The Borcherds Maths Challenge Trophy for the second year running at King Edwards School, they came 1st and 3rd place at the inaugural Malvern St James Year 4 Team Maths Challenge, and our Year 6 pupils came first in the area heats and 3rd in the semi-finals of the Quiz Club’s National Mathematics Inter-School Quiz Championship. In addition, many pupils take part in the National Primary Maths Challenge which is aimed at the top 60% of pupils in Years 5 and 6 England and Wales. All of the children in Y5 and Y6 and some of the Y4s at Blue Coat take part in the challenge annually.
