The Pursuit of Musical Excellence

The Blue Coat School aims to identify musicality at an early age and nurture that talent. As well as timetabled music lessons for each class, pupils can also have individual music tuition in a range of instruments and singing. You can see which instruments are available to each year group in the list below. To ensure the development of secure technique and musicianship, pupils are entered for instrumental music examinations at regular intervals. Many of our pupils achieve Grade 5 (or higher) before they leave the School at age 11.

Nursery children can receive individual tuition in either piano or violin.

Reception children can receive individual tuition in either piano or violin.

Year 1 children can receive individual tuition in piano, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, singing or drums.

Year 2 children can receive individual tuition in piano, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, singing, trumpet, guitar or drums.

In Prep (Year 3 to Year 6), pupils can receive individual tuition in piano, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, singing, drums, trumpet, guitar, saxophone, bassoon, oboe, horn or trombone.

Music Performances

Each term our young instrumentalists are given the opportunity to play in concerts and recitals in front of a supportive and encouraging audience.

We also have a large number of music groups and ensembles ranging from our junior music ensemble, Fiddlesticks, which provides group music-making experiences for our fledgling musicians to our Jazz Band and School Orchestra.

BCS Young Musician
of the Year

A highlight of our busy musical calendar is our Young Musician of the Year Festival which takes place each Lent Term.

With over 150 applicants for the various categories, the finalists are then invited to an evening performance which is judged by a prestigious external musician.

This competition gives pupils invaluable experience performing for a supportive audience but in a competitive arena. Previous BCS Musicians of the Year have gone on to receive music scholarships at their senior school of choice.
