What a week it has been! Fresh from the musical extravaganza of Week 9, we dived headfirst into ABRSM exams, with pupils from across the School showcasing their hard work and talent. Initial feedback has been very positive, and I must commend our musicians on their diligent approach to their music learning. As I returned to my study after a brisk walkabout, I was greeted by the delightful sound of Reception and Year 2 children singing their hearts out in preparation for the upcoming Nativity performances. Who needs Spotify when you have a live soundtrack of angelic voices wafting through the School?
Our chess players took centre stage this week as they headed to Hallfield School for the regional chess championships. Courageous and skillful, they demonstrated that focused lessons with Mr. Fallowfield are truly paying off. Each child represented themselves and the School with pride, proving that even in the cutthroat world of pawns and rooks, they are champions in the making.
In the absence of Fr. Andrew, who was off for a minor operation, I found myself stepping back into the role of chapel duties – a little déjà vu for me. Fr. George Reeves joined us for the Lower School Chapel service, and his infectious sermon was a hit with the pupils. But the highlight? 4JL’s performance, which could rival any West End production in spirit and enthusiasm.
On Friday, the senior pupils had to endure, I mean enjoy, me leading their Chapel service. Fortunately, I was ably assisted by the wonderful 5ZS, who truly embodied our theme of perseverance, one of our core values at BCS. It was a special moment as Mrs. O’Malley officially vested the probationary Choristers into the Chapel Choir. The pupils sang beautifully, and we even squeezed in a few games, though I suspect my competitive streak may have startled them!
Year 3 had their minds buzzing today with a STEAM day. Pupils tackled activities that challenged their curiosity while sparking an appetite for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. One child excitedly told me, “I didn’t know learning could be this fun!” (music to a headmaster’s ears). STEAM education is vital, equipping our pupils with the tools to solve real-world problems while igniting their imagination for a brighter future.
Finally, I must applaud Year 6, with a remarkable number of children being called for scholarship interviews. This talented cohort continues the tradition of excellence set by their predecessors. Across all year groups, I have seen classes striving to push themselves that extra 5%, proving that the commitment to our ethos of excellence is alive and well.
Thank you to the staff, children, and parents for another inspiring week. Now, as the weekend beckons, I recommend taking a leaf out of the pupil’s book: work hard, play hard, and remember to keep singing!
Have a great weekend, all!
