Science is one of the most popular subjects in the BCS curriculum – and for good reason! Our Pre-Prep Science Lead, Miss O’Hanlon, and Head of Science and STEAM Lead, Mrs Simmons, continually develop enriching and informative activities to deepen pupils’ scientific knowledge. From weekly lessons and STEAM Days to group projects and celebrating British Science Week, there are many ways we nurture a love of science.

Nurturing curiosity through scientific exploration

Each science lesson transforms learning into a fun, hands-on experience. While the curriculum provides structure, it is our pupils who lead the way in how they explore each topic. For example, our Year 4 pupils recently asked which crisp is the strongest so they designed an experiment to find out. Open-ended learning like this helps to sustain curiosity and enthusiasm for science.

In addition, our Prep pupils take part in STEAM Days throughout the academic year. Short for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics, STEAM develops problem-solving skills and inquisitive thinking. Pupils learn how to form an enquiry, plan resources, build models and test their designs, reflecting on how they can improve. This creative process builds valuable lifelong skills.

Getting the most out of science

Our state-of-the-art Science Lab facilities provide an inspiring environment for learning, a collaborative space where shared learning can thrive. It is no surprise that our Pre-Prep pupils enjoy visiting the labs – it feels grown up!

What truly enhances our science curriculum is the flexibility of learning. While many lessons take place in the lab, there are opportunities to explore science across the entire campus. During Biology lessons, for instance, pupils may visit the School Garden or Forest School to observe insect habitats or see photosynthesis in action. Science has no fixed boundaries – it is all around us.

Similarly, strong cross-curricular links enrich learning further. Many books on our recommended reading lists include scientific themes, allowing pupils to absorb knowledge even when they may not realise it.

A wealth of choice

At Blue Coat, we wear our love of science on our sleeves – quite literally after a visit to the Pre-Prep Science Club! From Science Ambassadors to British Science Week and the Year 6 Science Fair, pupils have a wide range of opportunities to explore their interests and ask questions about the world around them.

This variety also allows teachers flexibility in how they deliver lessons. Through our 1:1 iPad scheme, teachers can set tasks on Showbie and monitor pupils’ understanding, adapting their teaching where needed. Whether through digital learning or practical activities, lessons are designed to bring science to life.

Our aim is to instil a love of science in every pupil, from Pre-Prep through to Prep. With opportunities to explore and discover, each pupil is empowered to grow into a confident and capable young scientist.
