The Blue Coat School Birmingham has been designated an Apple Distinguished School

The Blue Coat School Birmingham is pleased to announce it has been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2026-2029 programme term.

Schools apply and are selected for this distinction based on their commitment to continuous innovation in education and using Apple products to inspire, imagine, and impact teaching and learning.

We are particularly proud that The Blue Coat School is currently the only independent school in Birmingham to hold this recognition.

Limitless Learning

Our vision of ‘Limitless Learning for Tomorrow’s Achievers’ drives our commitment to delivering an exceptional education experience that harnesses the transformative power of digital technology every day.

Our 1:1 iPad initiative launched in 2023 whereby every pupil in Prep is given their own, school-managed iPad.

These devices have enabled our pupils to learning in new, dynamic ways. The iPad devices encourage children to move, explore and create on a daily basis:

  • Exploring planets and the Solar System using augmented reality apps
  • Filming a science experience in slow-motion to see the reaction happening step-by-step
  • Compose and record an original piece of music using GarageBand

These tools empower pupils to elevate their learning beyond traditional methods and consolidate their knowledge through film, podcasts, music composition and interactive presentations.

The opportunity for collaborative working with their peers is also enhanced by this technology. It is easy for pupils to share work with one another, designate different tasks in a project, work in tandem on a document and share digital skills.

Additionally, with Apple’s powerful accessibility tools available on the iPad, every child can access learning in a way that works for them, helping us create a classroom that’s fairer and more inclusive.

While we embrace the opportunities of digital innovation, we also remain equally committed to the traditional foundations of an excellent education. Ensuring pupils develop strong literacy, numeracy and oracy skills alongside the digital fluency required for today’s world.

Digital Learning at Home

One of the most powerful aspects of our digital approach is the way it strengthens the parent–pupil–teacher partnership.

Because pupils bring their iPad home each evening, parents are able to see their child’s learning as it happens. Via Showbie, parents can view teacher feedback, access school resources and engage more closely with their child’s progress.

Our digital learning environment also integrates with our bespoke assessment framework, The BCS Blue, which tracks academic progress, personal development and wellbeing across the school. This allows teachers and parents to support each pupil’s growth in a truly holistic way.

Preparing Pupils for a Digital Future

Digital skills developed across the curriculum, alongside a strong understanding of responsible technology use, equip our pupils to apply their knowledge far beyond the classroom.

Pupils are taught to use technology responsibly and thoughtfully. Digital citizenship and online safety are embedded throughout school life. Strategies for keeping children safe online are also shared with parents through workshops.

Through co-curricular opportunities such as coding club and creative digital projects, pupils develop confidence in programming, problem-solving and digital creativity.

These experiences nurture curiosity and independence. Encouraging pupils to explore new ideas and pursue their interests using technology.

As a result, pupils leave Blue Coat not only as confident digital learners but with a level of digital fluency that sets them apart when they move on to senior school.
