The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith

Review by Jocelyn (3EC)

This book is full of silly versions of fairy tales. Instead of normal stories like The Gingerbread Man, there’s a story about The Stinky Cheese Man who smells so bad that no one chases him. There are so many other stories like Cinderumpelstiltskin and Little Red Running Shorts that have been mixed up and are super funny. The narrator Jack keeps interrupting the story and argues with some of the characters!

I liked how it was really funny, I listened to this on ePlatform, and the narrator’s voice was really silly and the giant’s laugh is REALLY funny!

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes funny or silly books of any age because even my Dad laughed!

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan

Review by Ethan (4JL)

It’s a normal day at school for Percy apart from his head is actually working for the god of the sea and the cupbearer of the gods (Ganymede) has lost something, something possibly chaotic… A cup. Not any normal cup, it’s one that has the power to turn a mortal immortal and Zeus can call for a strawberry lemonade at any moment so Percy has to battle old age to escaping venomous snakes.

My favourite part is when Percy infiltrates the lair of the lightning god 3000 and hears Zeus talking about deadly llamas in Crete!

I would recommend this book to anyone who is 8-10 because there is a lot of fighting in this book. I would also recommend it to anyone who likes mythology.

Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones

Review by Summer (5AG)

This book is about a young boy called Eric Chant (otherwise known as Cat) and his older sister, Gwendolen Chant. Gwendolen is gifted with unnamable powers so when enchanter and wizard Chrestomanci comes to adopt them Gwendolen is delighted. But at Chrestomanci’s castle, things don’t go as planned…

I enjoyed the whole book throughout but my favourite part was when Janet accidentally turns Euphemia into a frog and gets really anxious since she doesn’t know how to turn her back into a human.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and magic books or anyone who liked the book Howl’s Moving Castle or just anyone who wants to give it a go.

Quiet Storm by Kimberly Whittam

Review by Hannah (6MT)

Quiet Storm is a book about a girl who is quiet and shy and not an attention-seeker. Storm is very sporty and finds peace in running. She has just moved into secondary school and has only one friend called Zarrish. But soon that changes as Zarrish is soon asked to be the new girl’s (Melissa) buddy. Melissa is very rude and ignorant and loves the attention. Melissa is also very fashionable and always keeps us with the latest trends making sure she is always in style. But soon Melissa starts to break the strong bond between Zarrish and Storm.

Quiet Storm is a very modern book and you can tell in the way that Kimberly Whittam writes (Especially about Melissa). Because of this the book is very funny and enjoyable. This is also a book that I feel lots of people will enjoy not just because of the amazing humor but also because it is about school and this way lots of people can relate to this book. Also there are a lot of plot twists so it makes you want to read on and on until eventually you are sad because you have no more to read.

Personally, I would recommend this book to anybody but particularly year 5 and 6 as they are soon going into secondary school and I feel like introverted people may enjoy this book as they may want to build their confidence or to anybody who feels like they need a funny book which they can relate to as well as just enjoy the plot twists. This book is for anyone.
