Week 3 began in very typical fashion. Wet, cold and unmistakably wintry. Yet, stepping inside The Blue Coat School, the contrast could not have been greater. There was a genuine warmth of feeling following a highly productive Open Day, where prospective parents spoke with real enthusiasm about our pupils, our staff and the learning environment we offer. It was a moment of considerable pride and one that reminded me just how privileged I am to lead one of the great prep schools of England.

That sense of purpose was reinforced later in the week by an excellent Year 1 Parent Maths workshop led by Mrs Wingfield. Opportunities such as this are vital. It is important that parents understand not only how we teach, but how children learn. The turnout was strong and, as ever, very well supported by our parent body. It confirmed something I firmly believe; there really is no glass ceiling on children’s learning here at BCS when curiosity, confidence and partnership with parents are nurtured together.

This week’s Enrichment Homework for Year 3 and 4 centred on World Religion Day. As a Christian foundation school that warmly welcomes children of all faiths and none, it was genuinely moving to hear pupils discussing different cultures and beliefs with such thoughtfulness. This is not simply about acceptance. It is about knowledge, understanding and respect. As the educationalist James A. Banks reminds us, “Knowledge is the key that unlocks empathy.” These experiences matter, because they shape the kind of young people our pupils become.

This theme of togetherness is echoed beautifully in Chapel services, where Fr Andrew reinforced our shared values with clarity and warmth. It reminded me again of my often-used phrase, ‘Individually strong, unbreakable as one.’ I am deeply appreciative of the support and understanding shown by our whole community, which allows this ethos to flourish.

Looking ahead, we are now gearing up for the much anticipated BCS Music Festival. I very much hope your child will take part. Music is one of the cornerstones of BCS and lies at the very heart of school life. This was powerfully reinforced by a superb Year 6 recital this week, the feedback, as always, was exceptional. Coupled with the magnificent sound of the Chapel Choir, it underlines our strong national reputation for Prep school music.

Today, pupils dressed down in the colours of Malawi. Thank you to everyone who supported this with such generosity and spirit. I hope this evening’s Burns Supper proves equally successful, even if, regrettably, the token Scot will be absent due to family commitments.

I wish you all a very happy weekend and thank you, as always, for your continued support of The Blue Coat School.
