The Ice Palace by Robert Swindells

Review by Isaac (3JO)

The book was about a boy called Ivan and he had a little brother who was stolen by Starjik and his wolves. Ivan went on a long adventure in the snow with just a piece of bread, his boots and mittens and some wool wear, to rescue his brother.

I liked that Ivan was a brave boy who never gives up. I like that it is magical and there is a lady who helps him, by scaring off wolves or when he is about to freeze to death.

I would recommend the book to people who like adventure, fantasy and are over the age of four.

The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q Rauf

Review by Ethan (4JL)

This book was about a strange new boy from Syria that the main characters wish to befriend and get to know. They realise at the start of the novel that: 1.He doesn’t like sweets 2.He rarely talks.  The only piece of information the main characters know is his name is Ahmet, but after overhearing the grownups they find out that he’s a refugee, a child who runs from war, and when the main characters hear that the London gates will shut, they have got to find Ahmet’s parents in a week.

My favourite part was when Brendan the Bully gets a detention because it was satisfying seeing that rather cruel and insolent young Homo sapien getting what he deserves. I would recommend this book to a Y3-4 age group.

Harklights by Tim Tilley

Review by Elsa (5VF)

This is a story about an orphanage, Old ma Bogey owns it. Every child dreams of having a family, then some tiny people came, they took a boy as their son, even though he is too big. Then they heard of a big monster coming to scare the animals and destroy the trees. The boy knew it was Old ma Bogey, so the boy found a way to throw her down the bottomless well.

I would recommend it to people who are interested in life with no parents. And because they will feel the feeling of being trapped in an orphanage, with a horrible old lady who could throw you down the well, wears a iron thumb, has crossbows and guns on her walls, and a black cat that could shred you to pieces.

Cobweb by Michael Morpurgo

Review by Noah (6JM)

It was about a dog called Cobweb that grew up on a farm and some people thought he was dangerous except for this one girl called Bethan who wanted to keep him but her dad didn’t let her because they did not have enough money. It was in 1815 and also it was about the Battle of Waterloo which was England vs the French which thankfully we won.

I found it quite sad but good at the same time because her dad wouldn’t let her keep the lonely dog. I found it interesting because it had a bit of history in it which was quite fun!

I would recommend it to people who like history and like dogs. And for ages nine and over.
