Welcome back to what promises to be an action-packed half term! The pupils have leapt back into the rhythm of life at BCS with that infectious enthusiasm of theirs. It’s a joy to see them bustling around the school.
This week, our focus has been on Remembrance. On Thursday, I had the pleasure of leading a very moving, age-appropriate assembly alongside Fr. Andrew for our Pre-Prep year groups. The week also saw two poignant Chapel services—Year 3 and 4 on Wednesday and Year 5 and 6 on Friday. The observance was impeccable. A special thanks to our guest speakers: Rev. Charlie Butler, an Old Scholar and Governor, who shared a thought-provoking talk with the Lower School, and Rev. Sam Gibson, Parish Priest from St George’s Church Edgbaston, who gave us much to reflect on this morning. Their insights reminded us all, young and old, that war, both past and present, leaves an indelible mark on society. We cannot, and must not, forget those who sacrificed their lives. In honouring them, we instil a legacy of peace and gratitude in the hearts of our children.
Now, let me pivot to something a little more light-hearted—my recent quest for that extra 5%. On Monday, I’ll be addressing our pupils on this, but I must already extend my thanks to the parents who have been cheering on this ‘extra effort’ at home. So many children have told me wonderful stories of personal progress: one proudly shared they’d learned to tie their own laces (perfect for quick changes in games), another family committed to weekly ParkRun sessions, and one especially ambitious child has taken up the practice of daily times tables, even challenging me to a ‘table-off’! What can I say? Our BCS pupils are simply extraordinary – they thrive on challenges and always aim to be their best. It’s truly this collective commitment to going that “extra 5%” that makes our community so special.
Over the break, our new Atrium was finally signed off! It’s a fantastic space that Pre-Prep Aftercare will enjoy, as well as serve as a great space for events. I’m particularly delighted that our brand-new Food Technology room will also be in full swing, opening up a world of culinary opportunities for our budding chefs. The upgrades don’t end there – the swimming pool boasts a new floor and freshly refurbished wet-side changing rooms. Thanks to our wonderful Friends, we’ve got new starting blocks, too – sure to be appreciated by our swimmers! A big thank you to Mr. Morgan, our Bursar, for overseeing these marvellous improvements. I can already feel the energy of the children who will benefit from these fresh facilities.
Beyond all that, our Pre-Prep, Year 3, and Year 5 pupils celebrated Diwali this week, adding a vibrant cultural note to our first few days back. The pupils loved every second of their dance workshops, and the Nursery children were busy crafting Diyas (those lovely little clay oil lamps). It was a wonderful way for the children to deepen their understanding of the Festival of Lights, and they were utterly absorbed in their activities.
As I sign off for the week, I’m hoping to see many of you this evening at the School for the Friends’ Firework Extravaganza – it promises to be a fantastic family event. And before I forget, don’t miss the U11 boys’ rugby and U11 girls’ hockey match against The Downs Malvern on Saturday at 2 pm here at BCS. Come along and cheer on our young athletes!
Wishing everyone a brilliant weekend!
