This week began in a flurry of colour and cheer as the pupils arrived wearing odd socks, a simple yet powerful reminder that difference should be celebrated, not mocked. Odd Socks Day marked the start of Anti-Bullying Week, and it gave us all a chance to pause and reflect on the importance of kindness, inclusion and safety in our School Community.

At BCS, we take the safeguarding of every child as our highest priority. Bullying in any form is unacceptable, and I am grateful to Mr Hulbert and the staff for their thoughtful planning of the week’s activities. More importantly, I want to thank the pastoral team, teachers and support staff who work tirelessly every day to ensure that our pupils feel secure, valued and heard. As Winston Churchill once said, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” We must never be complacent, and we must continue to help our pupils find that courage, both to stand up for themselves and to stand beside others.

Earlier in the week, I had the pleasure of visiting the Pre-Prep classrooms. Beyond the warm welcome I received, what struck me most was the sense of joy and purpose in the air. The pupils were engaged, confident and eager to share their learning. Their relationships with their teachers radiated warmth and mutual respect. It reaffirmed my belief that happy children are the ones who thrive. When children feel safe and valued, their progress flows naturally from that foundation of happiness.

Musically, it has been a week to savour. The Prep Prelude Concert was a delight, an uplifting showcase of young talent, with a wonderful variety of instruments and confident performances from every pupil. Pupils were clearly well prepared and proud to share their music. Later in the week came the Music Scholars’ Concert, which left me utterly speechless. The quality of musicianship was remarkable, and the atmosphere in the hall was electric. To borrow the words of another great British musician, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” It is difficult to imagine a truer sentiment when one witnesses the joy and discipline that music brings to our pupils’ lives.

Today, we rounded off an exceptionally full week with a superb assembly led by our Heads of School in support of Children In Need. They spoke with confidence and clarity, embodying everything we hope for in our young leaders. The pupils responded brilliantly, although, if I am honest, I suspect wearing their own clothes was the real highlight of the day.

Finally, I would like to extend my congratulations to our current Year 6 pupils. The main round of exams is now behind them, with only the ISEB assessments for a handful of public schools such as Winchester and Eton still to come. It has been another very positive year, and I am immensely proud of their focus and determination.

As for me, I am off to Twickenham this weekend, I will leave you to guess who I will be supporting! Whatever your plans, I wish you all a restful and happy weekend.
