Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Review by Lyla (3RB)
The book is about a boy named Charlie Bucket, who comes from a very poor family. He finds a glimmering, golden ticket inside of a chocolate bar which allows him to visit Willy Wonka’s mysterious chocolate factory. There, he meets lots of interesting characters with very different personalities.
I liked that Willy Wonka had a very unique personality because he didn’t care what happened to the children who misbehaved. I didn’t like that each person (except for Charlie) had a different negative situation in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.
I would recommend this book to the whole of Year 3 because Roald Dahl is a fascinating author and Quentin Blake is an amazing illustrator and their stories have always been interesting and inspiring to read.
The Goldfish Boy by Lara Williamson
Review by Leela (4ES)
This book is about a boy called Matthew who loves everything sparkling clean and when he sees his neighbour’s grandson is missing he is on a quest with friend Melody to figure out who took him. Will Matthew find out?
I liked how each chapter keeps you hanging about what Matthew is going to do next with Melody. This book is very exciting.
I would recommend this to anyone 6 to 11 though anyone can read it, it’s a book for everyone!
Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
Review by Sophia (5AG)
This book is about a young girl called Stephanie and her uncle passes away and the only thing left to remember him are his books. As Stephanie embarks on amazing adventures, she realises that her uncle’s books certainly were not fiction. They were real. My favourite character is Stephanie (who later changes her name to Valkyrie Cain) because she is determined to help Skulduggery when she realises that the mission would be too hard for someone to do on their own. I love this determination as it shows how much she cares for other people when they face difficulties. My favourite part is when Stephanie first learns to do magi’s because on her first try, she falls but after she keeps trying and persevering and after many tries she succeeds!!!!! This tells me that a little practice every day can lead up to successful results.
I would recommend this book to people who love reading and would like to be a detective. Also, this book is an excellent example for people who want to be authors and want to hook readers in with their stories. I am definitely going to finish the series! I am sure that if you read Skulduggery Pleasant , you will definitely agree with me!!!!! It’s really is the best book ever!!!!!!
The Night Bus Hero by Onajli Q Rauf
Review by Sienna (5LN)
This book is about a boy named Hector who was at first seen as a menace because of his thoughtless behaviour, but in the end turned over a new leaf.
I like that Mei-Li was friends with two homeless people because it shows true friendship and shows that she is a kind person. My favorite character is Hector because he helped the two homeless people that Mei-Li was friends with and he changed to become a better person.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes friendship and realistic fiction stories. I would suggest people aged 8 and over should read this book.
The Hobbit by J R R Tolkien
Review by Oscar (5NB)
The book was about a hobbit named Bilbo who likes a quiet life, but gets dragged out on an adventure by a wizard and some dwarves to retrieve treasure from a scary dragon called Smaug. The adventure is magical, mysterious and marvellous!
I liked how they used lots of descriptive words and I loved all of the characters within the book. My favourite character was Beorn, who was half bear and half human. There only thing I disliked was the text was very small to read.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes fiction books and likes action and adventures.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle
Review by Zoe (5ZS)
This breathtaking book with a beautiful and heartwarming plot with quite a lot of twists and turns shows us that even when you have no courage in yourself others can help you towards your goal. Meg and Charles Wallace are siblings who are not really alike and Calvin O’Keefe is their friend who is very kind and nice to them. My favourite character is Charles Wallace as he is a determined and lovely little boy although others normally think he can’t speak but he is very good at “reading other people’s minds” – especially Meg and his mothers’. They are wrinkling in time or you may say tessering in time with three extraordinary ladies who are called Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which and I would say are nearly as old as time.
I loved how Meg and Calvin make their way towards Charles when they have nearly no hope in finding him when he is swept away from them. There is a lot of obstacles along the way which they both together as a team push aside which reveals the secrets and things they had no idea that would happen – there was nothing I disliked about it!
I would recommend this book to adults and children if they like fantasy and a bit of a surprise coming through.
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken
Review by Eva (5VF)
This book is an eye catching, hand sticking, page turning historical fantasy. This mesmerising fiction is about a destitute, cordial orphan – Sylvia who goes to live with her affluent but kind cousin – Bonnie. Bonnie’s wealthy parents have gone away in search, leaving the two girls with wicked Mrs Slighcarp. A few days later when Sylvia had settled in the cousins had found a secret passage were they can spy on others in the building. The first time they entered they heard malevolent Mrs Slighcarp talking about a ‘secret plan’ and the girls need to do something about it…
I liked how sweet Sylvia and benevolent Bonnie worked as a team. Although Sylvia has such little money and Bonnie had so much more they were kind to each other and treated each other equally.
I would DEFINITELY recommend it to any one who enjoys reading sweet, classical books with the spicy pinch of perilous yet exciting adventure.
Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
Review by Aarav (6JM)
Percy Jackson’s adventures aren’t over yet, in fact they’ve just stared. Camp is in trouble. Thalia’s tree is dying. It is easier for ferocious monsters to now attack because Camp Half-Blood’s magical borders are dying. Grover had gone searching for the great god Pan, god of nature who has believed to be dead but Grover refuses to believe this. Grover has sent an empathy link to Percy. When Percy sleeps he can see if Grover is in trouble and oh boy is Grover in trouble. Percy searches for Grover who is trapped (not in the way you would expect) in Polyphemus’s lair. Polyphemus does not only have Grover, but he also has the Golden Fleece. Taking the Golden Fleece is the only way to save Camp Half- Blood but the Fleece works it’s magic a bit too well…
I liked how many twists and turns the story had. In each part of the story I had a question, for example : ‘Oh my, what will happen to Grover if Percy doesn’t save him?’ Or ‘What will happen next?’
I would recommend it to people aged 7 or above. the reason for this is because people who are 6 and below wouldn’t understand most of the story.
