As we move ever closer to the summer break, another memorable week has passed in the life of our wonderful Blue Coat School Community.

Last Sunday, our Chapel Choir were once again quite imperious as they joined the Chapel Choir of Marlborough College for a magnificent service. I was delighted to hear that Mr Philip Dukes, Director of Music at Marlborough College, spoke in glowing terms about the standard of our pupil’s musicianship and performance. Such praise from one of the country’s leading musicians is richly deserved. My sincere thanks and congratulations go to Mrs O’Malley and her outstanding team for continuing to inspire excellence through music.

This musical success was further enhanced by Thursday evening’s magnificent Scholars’ Concert. I often find myself having to pinch myself as I listen to the melodies, artistry and sheer charm displayed by our young musicians. The standard achieved by pupils of such a young age remains almost surreal at times. Every performance was stunning and served as another reminder of the extraordinary culture of music that exists here at BCS.

Chocolate was very much on the agenda for Year 4 as they enjoyed a visit to Cadbury World in nearby Bournville. Beyond the obvious excitement of all things chocolate, educational visits such as these bring learning to life. The Year 4s were able to deepen their understanding of history, manufacturing and the importance of Birmingham’s industrial heritage, whilst also developing their curiosity and appreciation for one of our city’s most famous success stories.

At the opposite end of the age range, our Nursery pupils spent time learning about oral health and the importance of caring for their teeth. I was delighted to hear how engaged the pupils were throughout the sessions, asking thoughtful questions and demonstrating an impressive understanding of this important life skill. Establishing good habits from an early age is invaluable and our youngest pupils embraced the experience with great enthusiasm.

It was also lovely to hear of the continued success of our links with French pupils overseas. For many years, Mrs Newman has carefully nurtured these relationships and they continue to provide wonderful opportunities for our pupils. I vividly remember my own son, Jasper, thoroughly enjoying these exchanges. Learning to communicate and connect with others, in our own language and others, broadens horizons and develops confidence, empathy and understanding. These are skills that truly prepare young people for life in an increasingly interconnected world.

One of the highlights of the week was undoubtedly our annual Year 3 Grandparents’ Day and Lunch. The service was both beautiful and deeply moving, combining touching poetry with moments of humour and wonderful singing. The atmosphere throughout the day perfectly captured the spirit of family and community that sits at the heart of Blue Coat School. One grandparent kindly remarked that the occasion reinforced exactly why their daughter had chosen to send her son to this prestigious school. Rich praise indeed.

As we approach the summer holidays, I continue to encourage all of our pupils to read. Quite simply, reading is key. Books open doors to imagination, knowledge and understanding. I am extremely grateful to our brilliant Librarian, Ms Stacey, who arranged yet another inspiring author visit for the pupils. This time we welcomed Rose Gerrard, whose engaging stories and enthusiasm for writing encouraged our pupils to see reading not simply as a school activity, but as a lifelong pleasure. Encounters with authors help pupils appreciate that books are created by real people with ideas, creativity and passion, often sparking a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.

Today, pupils enjoyed a well-earned dress down day in preparation for our much anticipated Summer Fayre. My sincere thanks go to the Friends of BCS and to everyone who has worked so hard behind the scenes to create what I know will be another wonderful community occasion.

Sadly, for the first time in ten years, I shall miss the Summer Fayre. I have received an early birthday present this weekend and will therefore be away, although I very much look forward to hearing all about the festivities on Monday. Knowing our community, I have no doubt there will be plenty of stories to share.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our remarkable school. I hope you all enjoy the weekend and, if attending the Summer Fair, have a wonderful time.
