We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Mini and Junior Blue Award, a brand-new life skills initiative for pupils in Year 1 to Year 6.
This exciting programme will run throughout the academic year, giving pupils the chance to take part in hands-on, practical tasks both in school and at home.
The Mini and Junior Blue Award is designed to help pupils develop essential life skills that will stay with them far beyond the classroom. Through participation, pupils will grow in confidence, resilience, and independence, all while having fun and exploring new experiences.
The home-based activities are designed to bring families together for fun, shared experiences. They also give pupils the chance to make a real difference at home and in their community, taking on meaningful roles and responsibilities with results they can see and be proud of.
Themes and Activities
The award features a wide variety of engaging themes, including:
- Leadership and teamwork
- Trying something new, such as hula hooping, cup stacking, or skipping
- First aid skills
- Community work and helping others
- Two special challenges: a fundraising activity and a distance challenge
One of the exciting themes, “My World”, will explore The Blue Coat School Birmingham’s partnership with Playor School and Mlomba Primary School in Malawi. Pupils will discover what life is like for children in these schools, noticing both the similarities and differences. They will have the chance to write postcards to their peers in Malawi and learn to see the world through someone else’s eyes, gaining a new perspective on life and community.
How it works
Pupils will aim to complete up to ten tasks and two special challenges, either at school or at home as enrichment activities. Task by task, pupils will receive a certificate for completion, culminating in an end-of-year award – pass, merit, distinction or Headmaster’s Honours – depending on how many tasks they achieved within the year.
The Mini and Junior Blue Award forms part of the BCS Blue, which is The Blue Coat School’s bespoke e-learning and assessment platform. The premise of the BCS Blue is to not only focus on academic achievement, but also provide data of the values, skills and attitudes that are necessary for pupils to succeed in education and beyond.
The Mini and Junior Blue Award is more than just an accolade—it is an opportunity for pupils to learn new skills, explore their potential, and make a positive impact on their families, school, and community.
